Network card device name eIa, eWa, or eGa?

Hi,

What determines a network card's device name 2nd letter? eg what makes it a eI, eW, or eG device?

Is it machine dependend? eg if I have an EIA card in one machine, could it end up as EWA in another machine?

Does it relate to max speed?

The device name is normally related to the
name of the device driver.

Not normally, no.

Not really. Note, for example, that an "EW"
could be a 10MHz-only Tulip chip/card, a
10/100MHz chip/card, or a Gigabit chip/card.

As with most devices, the second letter is a type (often using a single driver or driver family).

e.g. DK for SCSI disks, DQ for IDE disks.

I in this case means an Intel chipset.
