OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

Good Morning,

I hope this is the correct place to post this.
I am trying to buy the hobbyist media kit for OpenVMS I am member of encompass.
I have E-mailed them, No one seems to be able to get the itanium openVMS media.

There is even a thread on the openvmshobbyist.org site.
http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=150&thread_id=506

Can someone please tell me how to get the media kit for VMS 8.3 for the itanium platform.
Hp seem to be making it very hard to get.

Thank you,
brendan

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

Send some e-mail to sms@antinode-org (more or
less). I'm (strangely?) reluctant to offer
what's probably a copyright violation on a
forum run by the copyright owner.

Nah. Just not making it easy.

I am bit lost, As i understand it if I am member of encompus I should be able to order a media kit?

I am not asking for someone to "give" me one I am asking for the official "correct" contact to order the media.

No one has been able to sell me an official media kit.

Thanks for you help,

Sure, but if a hobbyist IA64 kit is
available yet, it's news to me. (And the
Alpha hobbyist CD-ROM is getting pretty old.)

You're allowed to borrow one where you can
find one. I just don't believe that I'm
allowed to publish the stuff. There is a
fairly free flow of kits among hobbyists, but
no public HP site for downloads. (Some items
are available on the secret FTP server,
however, although not always in the most
convenient form. It's all very complicated.)

Wonderful So HP state "now available on Integrity" is pretty much not true.
Hence why I am here to try and get HP or someone from HP to fix this.
Lets face its Alpha is getting on now. I had a much easer time finding a Integrity machine then I did an Alpha or VAX. HP need to get the integrity Media kits out to the users if they want to make the hobbyist program useful.

That is a problem. I don't think this is the right place to ask for that.

It's not. That's what the quoted discussion on OpenVMShobbyist.org is all about.

Just yesterday I received a copy. It says "OpenVMS Alpha 8.3 and selected Products". Not too old...

Brendan,

I think that refers to the availability of the license program, not to the media.

There are quite some Alphas on Ebay, and most of them are cheap. Not so for Integrity systems, I think.

Any place where OpenVMS hobbyists are is the right place. IMHO.

I'd borrow you mine (or my company's, to be exact). But Germany is too far away, I guess.

Well, yes and no. The hobbyist program
includes IA64 now, and the license and PAKs
are available. You're still on your own for
the media, but I gather that an official
hobbyist DVD is still under construction, and
not yet available.

I'd say that it's a better place to ask than
to answer, intellectual-property-wise.

Actual hobbyists care much more than HP does.
I try not to get too huffy when I complain,
lest they take their ball and go home, which
would probably bother me more than it would
them.

I must have missed the announcment. I'd get
more excited if I hadn't already pieced
together from random sources most of what's
on it.

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

The updated OpenVMS Alpha Hobbyist kits where announced back in February.

http://www.openvms.org/stories.php?story=08/02/08/3899579

A OpenVMS Itanium Hobbyist kit is being talked about but does not yet exist. If a reasonable number of people said they would buy a OpenVMS Itanium Hobbyist kit if there was one then that would help.

Do remember that the hobbyist programme is run by people in their own time and they have full time paying jobs and personal lives.

For a company a good way of getting the OpenVMS IA64 media is becoming a company member of DSPP.

Perhaps someone in your part of Australia may be able to lend you some media.

Would the Hobbyist discussions be worth an informal meeting -- analogous of a Birds of a Feather session -- at the upcoming 2008 Bootcamp?

Good idea - I expect most of the relevant folks would be there.

Hoff,

I would certainly be keen in attending it in May.

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

I've not seen many cheep Alpha systems on ebay.com.au.

Recently picked up a zx2000 for under 150$ AUD.

I don't know of anyone (yet) over here that can help me.

I really hope that Hp can kit a media kit out one day.

Thank you for all your help!

Is OpenVMS IA64 kit available yet?

If yes, can someone please send me the link?

Thanks in advance.

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

AFAIK...

- no hobbyist OpenVMS I64 kit.

- no anonymous download is available to hobbyists.

- no plans for either.

You'll need to purchase a kit (new or used) or borrow a kit and tools from somebody that has one.

There are some related discussions over at the OpenVMShobbyist.org web site.

Send it where? Advertising a potential
copyright infringement in a forum run by the
copyright owner sounds to me unwise. Or, at
the very least, impolitic.

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist program.

Dear HPE OpenVMS hobbyist,

Received this notice today. It looks like the entire Hobbyist program is terminated. It would have been nice of them to at least post the link for the renewal as its proving difficult to find the link they alluded to.

This is to inform you that HPE is concluding the HPE OpenVMS Hobbyist license program in alignment with the HPE OpenVMS support roadmap.

If you wish to understand more details, please reach out to us at the earliest through the usual license renewal webpage.

Thank you.

Dear HPE OpenVMS hobbyist,

I received this in my mail today. It looks like the entire Hobbyist program is terminated. It would have been nice for them to at least include the link, as finding it is proving challenging. Another fine example of HPE abandining enthusiasts into the wild to seek out other more receptive companies ad vendors.
