Setup Oracle in OpenVMS ia64?

Hi,

I want to setup oracle by connecting to some other server available, because i dont have an Oracle installed in OpenVMS ia64 V8.2-1. By searching OTN, i could only find a Oracle 10g kit for IA64 box.

Now is it possible in VMS to connect to some other oracle 10g servers(for example, i have oracle 10g installed in my workstation(Windows XP)) without even having a Oracle Client in VMS?

Please send in your comments..

Thanks,
/manesh

Manesh,

no. You need to install Oracle (client) software on your OpenVMS I64 system, if you want to access any other Oracle server.

Correct, Oracle only ported 10g to OpenVMS Itanium, no earlier version. Install it!

But typically earlier (client) versions can connect just fine to more recent (server) version.

But your question is confusing to me (and Volker).

Sounds as if the client computer (existing VMS with Oracle 9i client software?) wants to connect to a Oracle 10g on an other server (a workstation). That should work.

Installing, and using, the 10g client might work better though. Various Oracle versions know to optimize specific connections, be generic connection still work.

Hope this helps some,
