Buffer Underuns with 9350i

I just installed an HP CD-Writer 9350i on my ibm aptica 2158-254 amd 380mhz system. I know i hooked it up right because it writes data cds fine at 10x. The problem is when i try to write audio cds with any cd program higher than 4x write speed. It has buffer underun problems! I e-mailed hp tech support and they said update your ali hard disk controller drivers. I did that exactly the way they said and it didn't help. I close all the programs before i write, i disabled dma, and even tried reformatting my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks.

Re: Buffer Underuns with 9350i

I had this problem creating audio CDs from MP3's; converting them to uncompressed wav files before writing the CD took up a lot of hard disk space, but it did allow me to create audio CDs without Buffer Underun errors. I'm guessing that it has to do with the CPU not being able to perform the MP3 conversion fast enough to keep up with high speed CD writes.

9350I

I installed a 9350I on my Dell following the recommendations of HP. The CDR-W was set to Master and chained to my hard drive. I kept the original CD drive (which was chained to a ZIP drive). I could create data CDs but not a Music CD. Here is how I fixed the problem:

I removed the HP CDR-W and put the machine back the way it was. I then re-started the installation process with the intention of replacing the factory CD drive with the 9350i. The 9350I was set to master and chained with the ZIP drive. Near the end of the setup process I got a error message saying the writable part of my new drive was not recognized (I was told later that this some times happens, no big deal as long as the software used for recording does). I IGNORED that and finished the setup I then rebooted, defragged the drive (on the advice of my cousin), closed down all TSRs (including virus scanners), turned off the screen saver and fired up the software that came with the 9350I. Wonder of wonders it worked! I can now create full length music CDs. It was recommended to me that I create a 10Mb partition for creating music CDs and then I wont have to defrag so often. I'll try that next.

When they say the creation of music CDs is sensitive they mean it! Defrag that drive and NO TSR or screen savers. I hope this helps.
