Re: CD-Writer 7200i Write Problems
Well, probably somebody else will find this, so I will tell how to fix this mess.
First, make sure the ASPI layers are functioning correctly.
Second, use a cleaning disk on the CD-RW.
Third, DON'T SWITCH MEDIA!!!!! These things are very sensitive to which media you use, find one that works and STICK WITH IT! Experimenting with different media, or generic media from the lowest bidder of the day, will result in a lot of coasters. Those bargain media 'spindles' often are full of overruns and may be several types thrown together.
Finally, if all else fails, check for heating and case stress. Open the case, and back off the hold down screws for the CDRW a bit. Make sure its running cool, not hot. Either of these things can cause the drive to get hot, which means uneven expansion, and that means the whole business is warped just a trifle. Clean your fans and make sure the airways are not blocked, and the fan blades are not worn out.
Just a thought, it takes a new PC about a year to get nice and dirty inside. Use a good computer grade can of 'air' and blow that dirt OUT OF THERE!
Cool, clean and good media. If those don't help, it probably is busted.

Re: CD-Writer 7200i Write Problems
Welcome...
you are a new member of 7200i-UFHP (7200i users foolished by HP).
Few people (including you and me) had cleaned the lens and it worked for some time with HP and Kodak discs.
Few people updated the firmware by most recent version from PHILIPS CDD series and they got something (but they lost the HP warranty).
Few people had added a second spring wire to the lens set and succesfully reduced the strange noise during boot or recording (the same procedure as 4020i), but just a few of these people above got good recording result.
Do not be amazed about the warranty expired few weeks before the recording errors..., this is happened to us all.
I think it is the time: we need to collect all technical solutions we found and put some pressure on HP.
I am sorry, but welcome...
