dvd200i startup programs

With the installation of a 200i apparently a number of programs have been added at startup. What do the following programs do, do I absolutely need them, and if not how do I get rid of them:
dvdbitset.exe
hpcdtray.exe
tfswctrl.exe
This last one has something to do with drive letter access. Windows XP lets me assign drive letters, is there any reason I need tfswctrl?
It would be really nice if HP at least documented these and gave some instructions on their removal.

Dvdbitset - only needed for making DVD+RW Discs more 'compatable' w/other computer and stand-alone DVD Players. You may use MSCONFIG
to disable (uncheack it) & re-check if needed.

Hpcdtray (or hpdvdtray) disable using MSCONFIG, use the shortcut from the destop instead.

Tfscwctrl.exe is for the DLA;
Unistall it and remove it from
starup.

Background task for Hewlett-Packard???s DLA software (Drive Letter Assignment). HP???s DLA gets installed when you installed the software that comes with their CD/DVD Writers. HP???s DLA is packet writing software which enables you to store data onto CD???s directly from within Windows applications, without using the actual CD Writing software (much like Roxio???s DirectCD. Many users have reported shutdown problems caused by TFSWCTRL "not responding". In all cases, since they were never using the DLA software and were instead using the CD Writing software to create their CDs, they simply de-installed HP???s DLA and that solved all their problems with TFSWCTRL.

I have a HP DVD 300e and I have similar items in my msconfig list. The information already given was fairly helpful, but I was wondering what hpcdtray.exe (or in my case dvdtray.exe) actually does. You say it can be disabled in msconfig and the desktop icon can be used instead, but what does it do?

In addition, you say the dvdbitset.exe file is needed for compatibiliy reasons. Does that file effect all software that is used to burn DVDs or just the HP software? I use Nero 6 to burn DVDs and it allows me to change the "book type" to DVD-ROM instead of dvd+rw in order to make it more compatable with other players. So would I still need to use the dvdbitset.exe file?

Nothing but take up memory. btw try to disable dvdtray.exe from w/i it's 'program options' or 'services.msc' or a shareware startup manager. Msconfig, should always be your Last choice, for removing programs from startup. See also http://www.blackviper.com/

Yes, but it is Only used for DVD + RW Compatablity.

Only in the DVD + RW mode.

I use Nero 6 to burn DVDs and it allows me to change the "book type" to DVD-ROM instead of dvd+rw in order to make it more compatable with other players.

Tough call, i have a 200i, and i loved using
Nero 6, BUT i started having Compatablity probelms, b/w the 2 programs (HP's DVD-CD DVD Writer & Nero 6). I ended up unistalling
Nero 6 and never had any problems since, you might also want to Uninstall HP's DLA mode.

So would I still need to use the dvdbitset.exe file?

I hope this helps & yes i miss Nero 6, but i have found that the More programs one uses for Writing to my 200i, the Quirkier it becomes.. let me know how the 300e is working out.

Well, most of my questions were answered, AND in record time too.

Now I have some more though. I (for the first time) looked at the DVD compatibility program to see what it could do. What are the differences between mode 1 and mode 2? Which is usually more compatible with stand alone players etc?

I have failed to find the option in any of the HP programs to disable the dvdtray feature. Do you know where it would be located if anywhere? (As a side note don't most 3rd party startup utilities simple disable items in msconfig... or do they go beyond that?)

In addition you say it does nothing, but when disabled on my system I was unable to use the DVD Compatibility Utility. The program said it could not find any DVD driver on my system. I re-enabled it and everything worked fine.

As far as the drive itself goes, it's great! Burns pretty quickly (considering the amount of date that being burned) and does a good job at it. Great for backups etc...
