Running a PII 350 120MB Ram Windows ME. Verified all the latest software on driver page is installed. Drive passes all diagnostics and all tests conducted prior to actually trying to record. Get error messages when the drive tries to record. Problems occur with both CD-R and CD-RW discs. I am able to format a CD-RW disc and "650MB available" shows up on Explorer following the format. Gives me an error message when I try to copy a file to it.

SolutionTry this. Go to:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpcd-write9681&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpg40410
and find the 7200i. Make sure you have the 2 software upgrades.
If you've already done this and still are having problems, let us know. Could you give us precise error messages. Thanks.

Re: HP 7200i Problem
Adaptec DirectCD Wizard 3.0 (12/15/99)
Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.5c (12/15/99)
HP Firmware Update v3.01
The upgrade listed on the page in your response shows an upgrade for DirectCD to version 2.5d. I appear to be at 3.0. Could my version not be compatible with a 7200i?
Contrary to my first post, I did not successfully format a CD-RW with DirectCD. After watching the process closely, I discovered that an error occurs and the window quickly closes and then the disk shows up as 650MB available. I wasn't watching it closely before, that's why I thought it was successful.
When I try to format, the directCD wizard status box shows "Formatting in progress, configuring disc.." for about 1 minute. Then it shows "Formatting in progress, verifying disc..." for about 45 seconds. Then an error box flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second that reads "Illegal start block address" and it shows some address in parenthesis (the box won't stay open long enough for me to read the address). It also says "You will not be able to read and write through the drive letter access" at the bottom.
When trying to record to a CD-R or CD-RW through Easy CD Creator. It goes through the testing phase OK (shows "Test Successful" at the end). Then it goes into the recording phase. Shows "Preparing to write the track", then "Writing Table of Contents", then it ejects the CD and shows "Errors reported by output device".
The errors are:
T7303: TrackWriter error - Undefined or invalid parameter
T7303: TrackWriter error - Undefined or invalid parameter
T7118: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed
D0100: I/O error (05/64/09) - sense code 0x64
D0100: I/O error (05/2C/00) - Command error - commands not issued
As I said in my last post, I ran the diagnostics program with everything checking out. The drive appears to read other CD's OK also. It appears to be hooked up correctly. Can't think of anything else to check.
Hope this helps out and I appreciate you getting back to me.

Re: HP 7200i Problem
Try the following for the DirectCD v.3 upgrade, or alternatively, go to www.roxio.com and find the latest upgrade:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/software/dcd30s54.exe.html
I just took a look at the Roxio website again and they've got some new stuff there, including a patch for IE5.5 users. You'd better get the latest stuff from their website.
Good luck!
BTW, I appreciate the 'points', but FYI if you award 8-10 points to an answer, it makes it seem that you're problem is solved and you won't get as much attention.

Re: HP 7200i Problem
I am having the same problem with my 7200i. I can read disks but not format or write. The same message comes up "illegal start block address". If you solve the problem please let me know....I'm still working on this one.

Re: HP 7200i Problem
Have you gotten the latest software from the roxio.com website and it still fails?

Re: HP 7200i Problem
I currenty am in the same situation as everyone else in this room. I am getting an error reported by the output devise. I can read Cd's fine but can't write them. It writes to the end and won't close. The error is [05/2c/00]command error. Then says commands not issued in sequence. I'm almost 99.9% sure this problem is NOT software related. Those that have had problems, did the error occur after burning a large file or a file over a network? I tried creating a cd from our LAN and received a buffer underrun error. Now I get this new output devise error every time.

Re: HP 7200i Problem
Apparently this is a common problem (according to the user forum group on the Roxio website. It is especially common on HP Computers.
I have tried all the recommended solutions: Toggle DMA Access, use CTRL-ALT-DEL to clear all running programs except Exploror, systray, and direct CD; Disconnected all hardware, deinstalled virus protection software, reinstall Adaptec software, use HP recommended brand of media. None of them work! The only thing that does work is if I do a full system recovery and bring my PC back to the factory state. At this point it will format CDRW for a while (even after I load back all my software). However, it will eventually go back to giving me "Illegal Start Block Errors."
A few notes worth mentioning:
- Problem is most common with Windows ME
- Version of Adaptec Software (CD Creator 4.0, Direct CD 3.01c) is not supported by Roxio for Windows ME. Why HP would bundle an OEM version of software with an OS that the manufacturer doesn't support is beyond my logic.
My Solutions:
- Short Term: Use software other than Adaptec
- Long Term: Never (ever!) buy and HP product again.
I chose this computer specifically for the direct-CD ability. Next time I will know better and order a Dell.
