HP CD Writer Plus

We have had problems with the writer on a HP Pavilion 6645C Standalone PC. The writer stops half way through the backup and locks up the PC. We uninstalled the Adaptec Software. When we try to reinstall using the application Recovery disk we get a message saying 'can't install CD writer software on this PC'.

Any sugestions on how to fix this would be appreciate.
