I have my new cdrw on my secondary primary which the manfu. recommends.I put my cdrom as a slave on the same ide cable.My computer does recognize both devices.My question is some people recommend putting the cdrom as slave to the harddrive, is this a good thing?Also I would have to use the same ide cable because of just one slot.

Hi,

It is like this. Your performance will be better if you connect devices in different controllers.
If you have two devices on the same controller, it has to read from one drive and has to write and then read...but if the devices are on different , then one can read and the other will write at the same time....

Hi there.
You should try to set it on CABLE SELECT.
You mostly have choices :

1.)
connect your cdrom on the IDE1 with the harddisk and the CDRW on IDE2
That would mean you put the breaks on your harddisk, because your disk may have UDMA 66 transfer and your cdrom only PIO mode 3 or 4.
The transfer always goes for the slowest device.


2.)
Connect your cdrom on IDE2 with your CDRW on the same channel. Set the cdrom as master by cable select.
Your cdrw should have buffer underrun avoiding techniques. Check your software whether it supports this feature.


I would go for choice 2. I have done this setup
at home without any problems on two operating systems ( Windows and Linux ).
