Problem with MicroServer Gen8 (E3-1220L v2, Smart Array P420)

Hello !

I am facing the following problem.

I have an HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8. Everything is working fine!

4 GB RAM / Smart Array P420 Controller with 1 Gb cache / CPU Celeron(R) CPU G1610T @ 2.30GHz (TDP 35 W)

However, I decided to replace the CPU with a Xeon® Processor E3-1220L v2 (TDP 17 W)

Rebooted, started Linux Debian 11 (I have NAS on it),
but after copying 500-700 mb of data from one disk to another, the following happens:

- the fan turns on to maximum
- The raid controller stops working (red LED on it lights up). In this mode access to disks is impossible, it just stops seeing them.

What is the reason for this?

After rebooting the same thing happens. As soon as any data is copied from one disk to another, the raid controller stops again and the fan is turned on to maximum.

At the same time, if you go to iLo - there the temperature readings of the devices are normal.

Diagnostics does not detect any problems with the controller.
If you put the old processor back in place - everything works fine again.
What can be, has anyone encountered the same problem ?

Thank you for attencion and help !

Hello,

If there any third party components, remove them, perform the procedure and see if it makes a difference.

@TVVJ Thanks for the answer !

But no, nothing like that. Just the Smart Array P420 and that's it.
I think it is the raid that is not working properly.

Although with the old processor everything is perfect !

I updated today including iLO, reset BIOS but it didn't help.

Hello,

Please consider reseating components. Please check if the heatsink of the new processor is installed correctly and the array controller is properly seated along with the cache module and the cable connections from and to the drives.

Re: Problem with MicroServer Gen8 (E3-1220L v2, Smart Array P420)

Hello !

Yeah, I've checked it 15 times.
even updated iLO to the latest version, but all these procedures did not help.

Can you please tell me if there is some software for hardware compatibility ?

I think there is something wrong with the raid controller.
The new processor consumes 2 times less electricity and I even think the controller is trying to take up the excess.
Could this be the case ?
And how to check it ?

I can't find any other options yet.
Thanks !

Greetings!

Please ensure that the BIOS is updated.

Are you using the embedded Storage Controller "HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i Controller"? If yes, then check below web-link.

Having said that, I do not see P420 listed in the server quickspecs or options part page.

Re: Problem with MicroServer Gen8 (E3-1220L v2, Smart Array P420)

Thank you for your reply!

Let me clarify that the BIOS is updated (the latest version from the official website is J06 04/04/2019).

I am also using the HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i embedded controller.
It has an SSD disk installed on it for the operating system.

And you are right, I noticed that my P420 controller is not in the spec.
It's only a P222.

Apparently I have an incompatible microserver raid controller with the processor I'm using.

So my only option is to buy a P222 and try again with a different processor.

Although this incompatible raid works fine with a Celeron processor.

Thank you very much !
