CIM7 Device Identification Problem
I'm having a problem with device identification in CIM7. Most devices are identified correctly; however, there is a group of about 10 servers that consistently are identified as Other or Unknown (these devices are a combination of SUN, Dell and Compaq servers). If I edit the device and define the device as a server and tell it to lock the configuration, the device will display 'green' status until the next time Auto-Discovery runs. After Auto-Discovery runs, it takes away the IP address from the editted device, changes the hardware status to red, and creates a new device that is Other/Unknown and status of blue.
The CIM7 server is running W2k sp3 and CIM sp2. The SNMP settings are identical for all devices. There are correct DNS forward and reverse lookups for all devices. The database is on a separate server running SQL2000.
Why is CIM consistently screwing up the devices that have been editted?

Re: CIM7 Device Identification Problem
Short answer: Turn off auto-discovery. If the problem still occurs (say after a reboot or something) then the auto-discovery isn't the issue.
As far as why it doesn't recognize the devices, I am not at all surprised that COMPAQ Insight Manager wouldn't recognize non-compaq hardware. On the Compaq machines you are having issues with, however, make sure that you are as up-to-date as possible with regards to the agents. The newer agents provide the ability for CIM to recognize the latest hardware, be it an entire system, or a RAID controller, or whatever.
