Re: Using DNS
The new HPSIM seems to use DNS even more and requires entries in both the reverse and forward lookup tables.
I've spent a bit of extra effort in getting the DNS accurate, it's the AD DNS and I've had to add a number of non-AD devices.
But, overall I believe it's worth it. All devices are identified. And, if they're correctli identified in IM then they'll be correctly identified throughout your organisation.

Re: Using DNS
I believe the issue is that DNS might not be accurate. I think what happen was that a discovery was used and a bunch of orphan devices showed up.

Re: Using DNS
Also if the IP address of name of a server changes then you can see two entries for the Server. Generally one is critical, this can be deleted from the database, just highlight it and either hit delete or the Actions pull down menu.
If after this you've still got issues you may want to look at DNS. The thing that caught me in the new HPSIM was that when we moved to an AD based DNS we implemented a new naming structure. But, as we've still got the unix based DNS there's some overlap. So, the IP to name may resolve as server.net.ad.wcc.govt.nz, but the unix dns may have this with just a wcc.govt.nz name. The two don't match so HPSIM reverts to the IP address.

Re: Using DNS
Ok guys. I've been reminded at the actual spot where it was recommended not to use DNS. When you add servers to the console you can click a box that says use Use DNS which we were recommended not to use. What they wanted to use was the IP.
Now I need to read the other posts.

Re: Using DNS
I just let Auto-Discovery do it's thing.
I just add the IP ranges and exclusions as required and run auto-discovery.
In either CIM 7 or the new HPSIM the Auto-Discovery screen doesn't have a DNS option. It lets you discover the devices by a number of protocols.
Once done, IM / DNS does it's thing and presents the servers with their IP names rather than addresses.
I've found manually adding devices caused me more problems than it solved.
Just my 2 cents (or currency of your choice) worth.
