HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10

Hola

Muchas gracias.

Hello

This is my first time posting here.

I have an HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 controller (with firmware version 7.81) and six Hitachi HUH721010AL4200 10TB HDD 3.5" SAS-3 12GB/s 7.2K RPM 4Kn mechanical hard drives.

I'm unable to use these drives to create a RAID array.

Is there a solution?

Thank you very much.

Hello @nosaenerxia

Yes, usually you can fix this. First, make sure the P408i firmware and HPE storage tools (Smart Storage Administrator / SPP) are up to date. Many problems disappear after updating the controller firmware and using SSA to configure drives.

Your Hitachi drives are 4K native (4Kn) and some Smart Array firmware or controllers don’t accept non‑HPE or 4Kn drives. Check the P408i compatibility list: if the controller does not support 4Kn, it will refuse the disks and you’ll need drives that present 512 bytes per sector or an HPE‑branded version of the drive.

Boot into HPE SSA and see what the controller reports for each physical drive. If the drives show as “unsupported,” “foreign,” or not present, note the exact message. If the drives have former RAID metadata, SSA can clear that (which erases data) and then you can create a new array.

If the controller still won’t accept the drives, options are: use HPE‑supported drives, use a different controller or HBA that supports 4Kn, or bypass the hardware RAID and use software RAID (mdadm, ZFS) if the OS can see the drives directly. You can also contact HPE support to confirm compatibility or ask about drive firmware.
