2 servers one entry in sim

I have 2 different NT servers with different IP addresses and names. I can manually discover one or the other just fine, but when I try to manually discover the other the name of the first one just changes. I can't seem to add them in anyway that allows both to exist. I've tried host file entries, adding by ip address and adding by name. All with the same result.

When adding one after deleting the entry you'll see in the events that the device was discovered. So adding the second server after this just causes the entry for the previously discovered system to change the system name immediately, it doesn't appear to even try discovery. Neither server has DNS entries that I can tell. They ping correctly by both name and IP address and nbtstat to the IPs reveals the correct names. I'm lost, I've checked every post having "names" in it and struck out so far.

Re: 2 servers one entry in sim

This can happen if you are using old agents and have deployed the second server as an image of the first one without using sysprep. In later agents (5.3 or later) the server serial number is the GUID. If both of these units have had MB replacements and did not get a S/N entered so it is still blank would behave this way.

Re: 2 servers one entry in sim

Both servers are running 6.10.20 agents. When deleted and added by themselves each server shows a different serial number in the General System Information tab. If you then try to add the other server the name wil change and the General System Information tab wil show 2 ip addresses, one of each server. We're trying to verify with the powers that be if there might be any aliases in WINS for one of these, but indications are there isn't.

One additional bit of info, buth of these servers are upgrades from NT 3.51 if that means anything.

Re: 2 servers one entry in sim

Just to be sure, delete the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Compaq Insight Agent\Hostguid on each system and restart the agents, then discover them again.

Looked at the keys and they are the same on both servers. We have to schedule the agent restart so I'll let you know what the result is after.

Re: 2 servers one entry in sim

That worked, they are now seperate entries in SIM. Thanks. They thinking here there may have been a business continuation test in the distant past that could have been restore of one server over another. That must have been how they ended up with the same GUID.
