A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

Have noticed numerous Java Related issues on this forum and unfortunately none of the suggested fixes address our problem. Basically, for no reason I have started to get this java message on our HP SIM Server. The server was setup from fresh only 1 month ago with all the latest patches/sw etc. Running HP SIM 4.1 only with JVM 1.4.1_04 which it downloaded. Worked perfectly until earlier this week. The latest MS IE patch has NOT been applied so this is not the problem. Have uninstalled Java completely and tried versions 1.4.1_04, 1.4.1_07 and 1.4.2_05. None work. No HP related Event log errors either. The ONLY thing that happended to the server was that it nearly ran out of disk space on the C: drive which has been rectified by installing an additional disk. 1G free now on C:. Messed around with IE Advanced Java settings too but to no avail. Don't want to install another browser unless I absolutely have to for the moment.

Do I dare installed the MS IE patch followed by SP26191??? I don't see why I should have to at this stage as I just want to get the server back to the state it was in last week. Unless HP SIM has somehow auto downloaded an update to itself which requires this patch to be installed???

Anyone any other ideas I wold be grateful as I agree with several other users in this forum that Java is such an expensive timewaster. It costs our IT dept more in support than Virus problems.

Thanks

Lenny

Re: A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

Thanks for you comments about Java. While HP SIM will still be written in Java in the future, we're making every effort to eliminate client-side Java at the browser. HP SIM greatly reduced its dependence on client-side Java in favor of JavaScript from where IM7 was.

Running out of disk space is a serious problem and can lead to corruption of critical files. Your best bet would be to un-install and delete everything associated with HP SIM and then re-install, recovering data from your latest backup.

Re: A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

Yes I just discovered a posting from May where several people had the same issue and the result was to re-install HP SIM from scratch which is what I have just started to do. As I said the server has only just been installed last month so I'm not worried about restoring lost data. Everything is still pretty fresh in my head so hopefully I'll be able to overcome all the previous problems I had very quickly. Although I do think this is a pretty drastic measure to take just because we almost ran out of disk space!

Lenny, it is indeed unfortunate that fixing this issue appears to be loading a fresh copy of HP SIM and Java. As you can imagine, this is not the method we want to follow in solving HP SIM issues.

If the Java issue happens again, we would appreciate you logging a support call on this. We need to get to the bottom of what is causing these problems and how to fix it without reloading the application.

Thanks,

I'm SOO happy to hear that HP will try and eliminate the need for client side Java. I truly hate having to manage so many different versions of Java for HP products. Let's see....SIM, WJA, management appliance, etc .....VERY painful.

Yes I did actually log a support call with HP initially when I couldn't fix the problem myself and then I closed it when I found the solution was to re-install HP SIM. The call log no. was 1204935616 if anyone from HP wants to re-open it.

Check that your file "globalsettings.props" is correct in size. When I ran out of disk on my HP SIM this file went corrupt... size of mine is 3764 bytes.

The problem was the globalsettings.props file for me. My server also ran out of disk space because of SQL transaction logs and backup files. They say if it's less than 4KB then it is corrupt.

Attached is a good version of the globalsettings.props file that you can use. You will need to restart the SIM service after copying this file. Just reconfigure the e-mail settings in SIM once you apply this file.

Re: A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

i've always had trouble keeping java working with insight, at one point i just kept jumping to the next of the 3 computers i had until all 3 stopped working, and nothing i did could fix it...then...I found that the new Java 1.5 works wonders on all my java problem devices. It seems like it hangs sometimes, but a refresh fixed any problems.

I believed that this was a final version, however java.com only lets you download 1.42. I found the link off of a high profile hardware site over a month ago, it linked to sun's website somewhere. I don't have the link anymore, but might be something you can google. File name is jre-1_5_0-windows-i586.exe

Re: A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

I also got the Java error on my Clients (Internet Explorer). Strange fact: Firefox worked witout any problems.

This all happened after the Disk on which SIM is installed ran out of Free Space. When restarting the SIM service the globalsettings.props is rewritten but this process failes and you're left with a incomplete props file.
After freeing up some space (Transaction Log backups wich were not deleted by the Maintenance Plan...) and restoring the globalsettings.props file from backup everything was working again.

So in short, i can confirm Hoang Pham's story.

Two questions remain:

1. Why does it work in FireFox but not in IE?
2. Why hasn't HP put some space check in SIM startup routines? (Less then 10 MB free space? Abort SIM startup and log error in Event Log.)

Obviously number 2 is most important as the props file gets corrupted, so even when it would work in IE, the file is still incomplete.

Re: A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system

One of the things I have found out about the Java 1.4.1_04 client, is if Java 1.3.1 is installed, it tends to not work. If I uninstall all and let HPSIM reinstall the 1.4.1_04 it tends to work fine after that. I have the same problem with Cisco works but the reverse affect, it likes 1.3.1 and not 1.4.1 versions.
