A trap / event for system startup ?

We are running Systems Insight Manager version 4.1

I would like to set an event to trigger an email whenever a server boots up, so that I can monitor unplanned reboots. (Windows 2003 servers.)

Is there a default built-in option for this - or do I need to make / import a MIB. I cannot find one in the listed events that came with insight.

any help would be greatly appreciated as I am new to insight manager / snmp monitoring

Re: A trap / event for system startup ?

That's a very old version of SIM, so I'm not too sure if all of the following holds true. And are you sure of that version number as that would be the very old Compaq Insight Manager.

When a server with the HP Agents boots and SNMP is configured correctly will send a "Cold Start" Trap. This is an classed as Informational but could be used for the e-mails you want. There's also a "Link Up" event generated but I'm not too sure if this is from an Agent or HPSIM. What I'm less clear about is how the old CIM would handle those traps and what you can do. we had it here but I started with IM 7. yeah the numbering conventions are a bit askew as well.

You really need to consider changing to HPSIM 5.

Version: Systems Insight Manager 4.1 - Windows

Hi

Hi

You can upgrade to HP SIM 5.0 from your version directly.

HP SIM 5.0 download page here :
http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/hpsim/download.html

regarding the boot-reboot monitoring :
You can use the following arguments when creating a task on your HP SIM server.
system = all servers
conditions : Systems Insight Manager Events
System is reachable or System is unreachable. These events are not necessarily linked to a boot or a reboot but a boot or a reboot would generate these events. If somebody unplugs a active network link, the same event is generated.

These are generic events but it includes your requierements.

hope it helps

Re: A trap / event for system startup ?

The 'cold start' event does not necessary mean you server have rebooted, restarting the SNMP service does the same thing.

To be sure that the server has rebooted, I would rather use a tool like Trapgen.exe that can send a trap if used for example in the Startup folder of the server.

You must provide it a txt file with the OID you want to use in the trap and some other settings. To make the difference with a common trap, you could use an OID that you are sure it will never be used in production (an OID for blades serves if you don't have any).

Re: A trap / event for system startup ?

Hi Nick!

I have a message sent anytime there is a cold start. It is true that this will also send when SMNP is restarted, but also sends when a server is rebooted. Then I can check the Event Logs to double-check.

I think this trap defaults to Informational, so I changed it to Critical because that is how I have my alerts set up.

The location is: Options, Events, SNMP Trap Settings. The MIB name is rfc1215.mib.
The Trap name is cold start. Make sure the Enable Trap Handling is set to yes, and change the Severity to whatever you need for how your alerts are set up.
