Adding Dell kit into HP SIM

HPSIM 4.2

Im trying to monitor dell servers using hpsim. I've followed the dell document to add the dell mibs into SIM :
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/Integrating_PowerEdge_Servers_into_HPSIM40.pdf

This works great! However aside from the 2 main mibs there are more mibs which I want to add which are beyond the scope of the document. For example, the broadcom mibs which allow you to monitor nic failover. I've tried to apply the document when adding the broadcom mibs, but it just doesnt work. Has any one go any experience with adding dell mibs into HPSIM?

thanks

"it just doesnt work."

Can you be more specific?

You might also benefit from the following whitepaper: "Compiling and Customizing SNMP MIBs with HP Systems Insight Manager" at http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim --> Information Library

Re: Adding Dell kit into HP SIM

"i just doesnt work"...means that I dont get any events in HP SIM.

So for example, having followed the dell document and loaded/compiled the new10892.mib. On dell poweredge 2650 discovered in HPSIM, if i pull one of the power supplies out I get an event into HPSIM notifying me of this. Which is fine.

However, when I tried disabling 1 of the nics in the team (to simulate a nic failover) I got an alert in DELL IT Assistant but I didnt get an alert in HPSIM. Therefore I copied the broadcom nic mibs from the dell cd into the HPSIM mibs folder of where its installed and I registered and compiled these mibs. I then tried following the doc in the same way as for the new10892.mib but still if I initiate a failover of the nic, I dont get any events into HPSIM.

Re: Adding Dell kit into HP SIM

Assuming you did not receive any errors during the mcompile and mxmib procedures, follow the chain.

First, configure HP SIM to 'Accept unregistered events' so that it won't toss away things it doesn't understand. Confirm that you are receiving events from that device to prove SNMP is properly getting the message to the HP SIM server. Compare the raw event to the MIB and see if there is an error in the MIB (a HUGE percentage of problems in this area -- 3rd Party MIBs -- are errors in the MIB).

Re: Adding Dell kit into HP SIM

Yes thats right, I didnt get any errors during compile.

Ok...modified the Setting in Options->Events->Event Filter Settings and placed a check box against "Accept unregistered revents".

Confirmed that snmp is working since this host is already sending events back to HPSIM.

I then tried again and still no luck when I simulate a nic failover.

Not sure how to "Compare the raw event to the MIB and see if there is an error in the MIB"

Re: Adding Dell kit into HP SIM

If the system is in fact sending the trap, and it is received successfully by HP SIM, even if everything is screwed up in the MIB, you would receive a generic unregistered trap in the HP SIM event log. (See attached)

If HP SIM is receiving other traps from this box and you can't see a generic trap in the HP SIM event log when generating the error condition, you've got to seriously consider that the Dell system isn't generating a trap. You may be getting something in the event log, but something isn't also sending a trap in SNMP.

Maybe that's the reason Dell left off this information in their whitepaper -- their agent doesn't work.
