Alteon Integration Problems
Good morning. I need to discover a Nortel Alteon 2424 switches, i can't find the specific mib to this switches, so i decided to use a generic one. I do this steps:
- Copy the .mib files into SIM_BASEDIR\mibs
mcompile file.mib
After that, i run mxmib -a file.cfg
This operations did OK. Now i can see this files en Options > Events > SNMP trap settings.
Now i can see the specific .mib that i load, but when i start discover the devices, a very few information is shown. Can somebody help me ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Alteon Integration Problems
HP SIM uses MIBs exclusively for trap translation. Adding a MIB for a non-HP device does not affect how much information is collected from it. Using SNMP exclusively, HP SIM is going to get only very, very basic information about a device in its database. Also, HP SIM is essentially a server management product--if its not a server, it doesn't fit very well into the HP SIM universe.
What you can expect is that HP SIM will show basic up/down status for your device in the HS column, and will be able to receive SNMP traps from it (assuming you have the events MIB properly compiled and registered), and some basic information. You may have to create a rule in the system type manager to get it to be classified as something other than 'Unknown' (which means that there isn't an existing rule for classification). If the device has a built-in webserver for device management and it exists on a standard port (like web server default port 80), then HP SIM will identify that as well and provide a link to it on the system page.

Re: Alteon Integration Problems
Thank you very much for your answer David.
I know that Alteons are outside HP SIM Universe, but one of our customers want to integrate them into SIM, we also know that SIM will provide very few information but we exactly need the contents that you mentioned before.
If the ports are up or down and HP SIM will be able to manage and understand a SNMP trap.
I load the same MIBs that we have in other customer in NNM for Alteons, but, i as said in my first post, the port state isn't filled. Any ideas?

Re: Alteon Integration Problems
What do you mean "the port state isn't filled" ? Where are you looking for that in the HP SIM interface? The only thing really to expect is that HP SIM will show a green 'Normal' or red 'Critical' in the HS column based on whether the device will respond to a ping from HP SIM. Beyond that, HP SIM has no idea how to derive any other kind of status from the device.
