Backup Device Needs Cleaning

Does anyone know what criteria CIM7 uses to establish whether a backup device needs cleaning or not? I only ask because we seem to get quite a lot of notifications and when the drive is examined, there are no visible signs ( ie. the ' clean me' LED) of any issues.
Is this because the CIM is more critical, do you think (I'm assuming it monitors data rate error) than the firmware in the drives? Which should we believe, as we don't want to be cleaning drives unecessarily? Any help would be appreciated.
