Create more advanced system lists?

Create more advanced system lists?

I would like to create a system list that contains only servers with specific text in their "Location" SNMP agent field. It does not appear that I can do this. There are only a few options to query for system lists, i.e. ip address, operating system, protocol, etc. I'm hoping that I'm just missing something here. In CIM7 you could create a query based on just about anything. Any ideas?

I'm pretty new to SIM, but on a steep learning curve! I use the free-text 'server role' field for grouping servers. I can then use this to generate alerts for whichever team needs them. May not be the correct way of doing it, but it works for me. Of course, if you have dual-role servers you have another problem altogether...

That's a good idea - actually, I'm already using that field for other data. I have to watch what goes in there though as there is a max limit of 64 characters. The "location" is a standard SNMP field that all SNMP agents and clients know about. SIM should be able to do this.

Re: Create more advanced system lists?

I'm curious on this one as I'm looking into the same problem, how do you go about setting the values on the servers.
I know it is stored in registry, but do you have any good ideas on how to mass-update servers ?

Atm I'm looking into what else can be done with queries since a rather simple query of say 5 selects works ok when you need to change/update it, but some teams needs queries that does some 15-20 selects and that takes almost 10 minutes just to get into edit mode of the query. Saving is extremely fast, only the entering edit mode is slow.

Re: Create more advanced system lists?

Overall, SIM4 seems to operate very slowly. I'm running it on a DL360 G2 w/ 2CPUs, 2GB RAM, and lots of drive space. Using MSDE on the same box. Don't know if this is because they are using java so heavily or what, but better performance of the product would be cool.

I've got another server running CIM7. It is a DL360G1 with 2x1GHz CPUs and 2GB of RAM. That box runs CIM7 10 times faster than SIM4. What's up with that!? In fact, the older server has a lot more traffic on it than the new one.

There is always the possibility that the poor performance I'm seeing is due to a configuration problem or something.

Still haven't heard anything about my original post though. Thanks for the replies I have gotten so far.

Re: Create more advanced system lists?

Brent,
What do you mean by runs slow?

Browser connectivity?
Speed of response for recognising a device is down?
Speed to poll and identify the devices?

I've found HPSIm to be comparable to CIM 7 but it took a bit of tweaking for some of the tasks.
By default it tries a lot more protocols but you can change that.
