Discover ILO through SIM
Hello,
If you install SIM on a couple of hundred servers. Can you discover and configure the ILO boards in those servers through SIM ? Or do the ILO's have to be configured with CPQLOCFG first. So that SIM can discover the ILO's then ?
So do you use CPQLOCFG first and then install SIM ? Or do you install SIM and configure the ILO's through SIM.
The ILO - Best Practices recommends first using CPQLOCFG, but is this true ?
I have no server here to test.
Can anyone help me ??

Re: Discover ILO through SIM
Hi Robert,
You can discover and configure iLOs through SIM. First the discovery part...
As long as the iLO has an IP address it will be discovered by SIM. They show up as Management Processors. However, you need to make sure that on the target servers in which the iLOs reside you have enabled the Remote Insight Agent. Depending on how you initially installed the OS would determine if this agent is already active. To check, go to control panel and look at the HP Management agents applet. There you will see a list of Active vs. Inactive agents. As long as the agent is on the active list then life is good because SIM will know how to associate this server to the iLO it has. That way when you are looking at all of your Management Processors, SIM can now tell you what iLO resides under what server name. So the discovery part is easy. The configuration part ...not necessarily easy. The CPQLOCFG utility can be launched from within SIM but I have not tried it with SIM. I had no problems from within IM7 but IM7 used something called Application Launch. Through AppLaunch I was able to launch a batch file and use NAME VARIABLES for the iLOs and Riloes.
SIM uses DTF or Distributed Task Facility. DTF allows SIM the ability to do updates to one or more targets using scripts, batch files and custom commands. To do what you are talking about doing to multiple iLOs can be done but I've not looked into it enough to be of help. You may want to post a separate question in the iLO\Riloe forum.
One key thing... When you initially setup the iLOs, it would be of great benefit to setup some sort of "master" account which resides on all your iLOs. This way the xml scripts that CPQLOCFG launches can log in using one overall account.
Hope this helps a little.
Ed

Re: Discover ILO through SIM
Hello Ed,
Sure it helpes. I will change my strategy on what you wrote. I will configure the Ilo's with an IP address and change the password of the default administrator initially and periodically. Should it ever be forgotten. You can reset the Ilo.
The rest of the properties I will configure with CPQLOCFG too, but then through SIM.
Then I will enable Directory Services, import the Ilo's and be able to manage them through AD.
Thanks for your input for thoughts.
More food will be greatluy appreciated.
