Event Notification - Repeat Interval

If any of the managed nodes is brought down for maintenance, say for 5 hrs, how often is the alert repeat interval, assuming using email notification.

You should only receive 1 e-mail notification when a server goes down.

I found out if I don't "clear" the event, there will still be mail alert. So is this configurable ?
