False reading on HD status

I am running HP SIM 5 w/sp4, latest firmware on all servers. HP SIM tells me my HD has failed & replace drive. The drive has a red light so I replace the drive. This is a production server and cannot be taken offline.

I install the drive in an offline server to run a test but it passes. How is this possible?

Re: False reading on HD status

Hello Francis,

SIM reports predictive failures too.
What tests were done to check the disk?

Check http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00596597

Re: False reading on HD status

Thanks for the quick reply. After reading the above link,I guess I will have to rely on the ADU on the SmartStart CD.

I have check all cables, & firmware. Is this a bug in the software or hardware.

Re: False reading on HD status

ADU is a online utility too.

In Windows, Start -> Programs -> HP System Tools -> HP ADU

In Linux its a web version,if you have installed PSP, start the daemons and launch SMH.ADU will be listed.

Another option is if you can schedule a downtime, reseat the scsi backplane.

Re: False reading on HD status

Yes there are many tools for MS unfoutunetly we are a big Novell shop.

Downtime is not an option.

I will have to replace the drives and use the offline server.

Thanks

Re: False reading on HD status

I'm quite sure survey would give information about the disks.

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24505.html
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/WebDoc/710/surveyug.pdf

And since the disks work on the other server, its sure an issue with the storage sub-system on the production server. Perhaps reseating/replacing backplane will fix.
