Re: HP SIM Design questions

HP SIM Design questions

Hello,

I'm working on a SIM design.

We have a HQ and 7 branch offices (A - G).
In bracnch office A we start with a Management domain and a CMS. In time HQ will demand to have the central management.

Is it possible to install another management domain and add Office A as a sub domain. Or can you move the domain up to HQ and make offices A-G System groups ?

How many managed systems can a system group manage ?

How many management domains can there be ?

I cannot find the information in the forums or the manuals.

Can anyone help me.

It would be greatly appreciated.

Re: HP SIM Design questions

HP Systems Insight Manager is not designed to be a cascaded system, with sub-groups reporting in to a master. Assuming all of the systems are part of a WAN, management information is not that much of a bandwidth hog, so usually a single HP SIM can manage all of the sites.

The rule of thumb is generally:

- MSDE is appropriate for up to 500 devices and 5,000 events
- SQL 2000 is appropriate for up to 5,000 devices and 50,000 events

The one thing that can hog bandwidth is software and firmware updates, so it generally would be recommended to have a Version Control Repository at each site.

David,

Thank you for the information.

If you start out in branch A and put a CMS there. Later HQ says that they want central management. Can you just take the CMS there and maybe reconfigure some agents ??

Re: HP SIM Design questions

If the CMS were moved and retained the same name but the IP address changed, the only thing really to change would be trap destinations. To avoid having to regenerate a certificate and breaking trust relationships if the domain changes, generate a new certificate using the short name. That way you will be able to do a group config to change the trap destination.

Re: HP SIM Design questions

Thanx.

I know how to work out my design now.
