HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

I am having a problem with things other than the server going down and coming back up, not pagin or e-mail us when it sees a problem. It shows it in HP SIM tha the device is not working, but we do not get any e-mails stating that there is a problem. We get other e-mails when the server is down or up, just not specific events.

For example, I break the mirrored drive on one of our servers and SIm sees it as a broken mirror, and reports it as a HD error, but we do not get any e-mails stating that there may be a problem with the drive, so that we will know ahead of time if something is wrong with a drive, NIC, etc. I have setup all the MIB's to send pages out, I believe, but still do not get anything.

Anyone else have this issue, or know what I would need to do to get paging or e-mails to send out to us?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

Are you getting Uncleared events generated when something like a disk fails?

If you're getting an event generated, then you need to check on your Event Notification settings.

I have a general e-mail set up, I catch all Uncleared Major Events and Critical Events.
Start with something like that and then add more refined e-mails. You'll get duplicates for a whild but you could trim them later.

No I am not getting any e-mails of Uncleared events.

I have looked at my event notifications and they look properly setup. How were you able to catch all of the Uncleared Major Events and Critical Events in your e-mail, if you don't mind me asking?

I am at a loss :(

Dave:

Rob was trying to track you through the troubleshooting and find where in the chain the miss is happening:

- Error should be visible in the failing machine's event log
- Trap should be visible as an Uncleared event in IM7 if the trap destination is set properly
- email should be sent

he was focusing in on the middle step. Is that happening?

Re: HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

Yes, there is a message on the server saying that the Mirror was broken.

And yes there is a message from within Systems Insight Manager stating that there is something wrong with the server, it is located under the System Status in the top right corner of SIM.

But no message is sent out to me through e-mail stating the mirror has been broken, unlike in IM7 SP2.3, where we would get e-mails sent to use stating that the mirror was broke.

I belive it's got to be a setting under the MIB's, maybe, that may not be setup correctly on the new SIM. But I amy be way off on that thinking.

I am going thru the SIM booklet page by page to see if I missed something about setting up paging/e-mails, but have not seen anything describing what my issue may be.

Does that make more sense on what my problem is? :) I may not have explained it perfectly in my initial message.

Thanks for the help,
Dave

How is the notification task set up? I found that if too many variables were in the selection criteria, the the notification task stopped working. I finally went with:

Event category: Proliant Storage Event
Type Name:

I get a few extra messages (mostly for Tape Library status changes), but created an rule on my email client to discard those.

Re: HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

Pat,

That is exactly what I have setup. I don't mind if I get any of those pages... I just wish I would get any of them :)

I look at my Managed Taks and see that all of my tasks, except for 2, have NEVER run. And we have had servers go up and down with issues the past few days.

We are currently running IM 7 on one box, and the new hpSIM on another, so I can see what pages should be coming trhough, and which are not.

But yes that is exactly how I have it setup. But no e-mails.

I have 11 Event Handling tasks... COuld that be too many? I wouldn't think so. But I am willing to try anything now :)

Re: HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

Sounds like it is not meeting one or more of the Automatic Event Handler (AEH) task conditions. I have also noticed that some sets of conditions 'break' the AEH task. For example the drive issue discussed here. If I set the task to only notify on 'Physical Drive Status Change', the task wouldn't work. When I set to Proliant Storage Event', it works OK.

I have one AEH task set to send me a note on Severity , system , just so I can verify messages coming out of the HPSIM server (we're still developing our notification rules). Try this with a special subject line, and filter in your email client for this subject line. This should at least verify the server is processing the events. I've picked up a few AEH rule problems this way.

AEH tasks that have never run means that the required selection criteria have not been met yet. AEH tasks are driven by the events received by the HPSIM server. Try the general event notification above, and use it to verify your selections.

Re: HP SIM Issue with sending E-mails

Pat, thanks for the help and insight. It looks like I am unable to get it to send pages out for anything besides Server Up and Down traps.

I deleted some of my AEH tasks, and recreated them, and then pulled the drive out, and still did not get an notifications, but did see that hpSIM listed it as a problem in the hpSIM software.

I may have to keep IM7 SP2.3 and pass over on the new hpSIM tool, which we really wanted to get working. But if it is this difficult to get notifications setup, then we can't have servers dying on us without notifications, and these are pretty critical items we would like to be notified on.

Maybe after a few months or year when updates to hpSIM come out, they'll have fixed these little issues with the new System Management software.

I guess if it's not broken don't fix it, IM 7 SP2.3 seems to work flawlessly for us, but we REALLY wanted to use this new hpSIM :)

Thanks all for the help,
Dave
