IPMI Provider

I installed the new 8.10A PSP to a test server
(ML370 G4, 2003 SP2).
One of the items that came up for install was
HP ProLiant IPMI Provider. I have never seen this before and did not install it. Does anyone know what it is, what it is for, and if it is truly necessary? We don't install anyhing more than we have to on our servers. Thanks!
