Java error on login

I installed Sim 5.1 for Linux on two virtual machines and both give the same error - even after initial successful login as root.
Both VMs are running under ESX 3.01. VM1 is SLES9 SP3 and VM2 is SLES10. Both are using supported configurations. I've searched the forums and google and tried the "remove everything under /opt/mx/jboss/server/hpsim/work and restart". No difference.

The error is the same in both cases:

tried it with Firefox and IE6 browsers - no difference.
Am I the only user globally to have this issue on SIM 5.1 for Linux ? Any help is appreciated.

Some more info ... the pages that the error appears on so far are:

Automatic Event Handling - New Task

Errors appear regardless of which user or browser is used, and are still there after 4 reinstalls.
