Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

I rececently upgrade my SIM management server from SIM5.1SP2 to SIM5.2 to take advantage of Windows 2008 Server support. However, the SIM management server is still not getting any SNMP traps from the Windows 2008 managed servers. What else do I need to do beside upgrading to SIM5.2?

The SIM management server is running Windows 2003 Enterprise edition, and the Windows 2008 managed servers are either 64bit or 32bit edition.

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

HP SIM doesn't really care about the OS of a target server as long as supported agents are there and configured properly. Assuming that SNMP is installed and configured properly and the ProLiant Support Pack is installed and configured properly, my first thought is that you might have security options like a firewall enabled in WS08 that is interfering with communications.

My first step, however, would be to select the WS08 servers and then use the new 'Manage Communications' feature in HP SIM 5.2 to advise you on what may be going on (or not...)

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

David,

I actually was wondering if some security feature on WS2008 that is blocking the trap because when I send a Generic test trap from WS2003, I would get the alert in SIM almost right away, but nothing happen if I do the same thing from WS2008.

Where do I find the "Managed Communications" feature?

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

Yeah, i can't seem to get my Windows Server 2008 servers to detect properly in SIM.

"This system does not have any supported instrumentation.
Root Cause: Identification failed to detect any supported instrumentation (e.g. SNMP, DMI, WBEM) on this system."

I have the PSP 7.95 Installed, SNMP is installed and configured with IP of SIM server in security tab.

I tried turning off the Windows Firewall, but it didn't help.

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

Well, I installed the PSP 8.0 for Windows 2008. That didn't really help this issue though.

I found that adding ports 2301 and 2381 to the windows firewall allowed the HP Systems Management Homepage to communicate ok.

The problem really comes back to SNMP though, it just won't talk no matter what. I've even turned off the windows firewall completely and set the SNMP security settings to "Allow All."

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

I've used the HPSIM option to add a new device to manage to test SNMP before.
But if you're not seeing any intrumentation listed after an identification task it does seem to indicate W2008 is stopping something.

Looks like W2008 is very secure...

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

Yes, I would say something on WS2008 that blocks the SNMP traps, but I have not found it yet. I have checked the SNMP configuration, and nothing is out of ordinary there. Firewall is not enabled, so that's not the problem either. If anyone figures out the issue, please post.

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

On ProLiant Servers 300 series and up running any version of Windows 2008 with HP ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) 8.0 may not send hardware failure trap alerts to the trap destination.
When a hardware such as one of the hard drives or one of the power supplies is failing, an event is logged in the Windows Event Viewer log. A Trap event should also be sent to the destination server that is configured in SNMP service. This is not the case when the server name (computer name) consists of any lower case character.

For example:

If the server name is: MYSERVERNAME â an alerts event will be sent
Server name is: MyServerName â an alert events will not be sent.
Server name is: myservername â an alert event will not be sent.

Correction:

For example:

If the server name is: MYSERVERNAME an alert event will be sent
Server name is: MyServerName an alert events will not be sent.
Server name is: myservername an alert event will not be sent.

My server name is all CAPS and still not working

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

Is it the local server name that needs to be in all caps, or the destination server configured in SNMP that needs to be in caps?

Many of us use IPs and not server names when we configure SNMP, so I'm guessing you mean the local server name.

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

What if it is MYSERVERNAME.domainname.net?

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

I have applied HotFix discussed in KB Article 950923 - It Fixed the Event log errors but still no traps sent. I also Redirected to a different SNMP Reciever - Non-SIMS, and the traps did not get there either. So safe to say not a SIMS issue - But i am sure i am not the only one running into this and many will have the same question once W2K8 gets hot.

Any Idea

The FW is completely disabled - Domain, Private, Public, etc...

HELP!!

Local server (the server being managed and sending traps)
Right Click on My Computer > properties > Computer Name Tab > Change > in the Computer Name field the name should be all CAPS

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

OK, Specifics are important when i can not see what you are looking -

My computer name is all CAPS, my Domain Name is lowercase, Does this make a difference

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

After a week working with Microsoft testing SNMP traps, we came to a conclusion that SNMP was not the issue. As I was ready to open a case with HP, I read it somewhere that HP started providing WBEM service for trapping alerts with PSP 8.0 and later. This is separate component from the PSP (CP008265.exe for Windows 2003/Windows 2008 32-bit Editions; and CP008266.exe for Windows 2003/2008 x64 Editions). I installed this component on all of our Windows 2008 32bit and 64bit servers and tested out the alerts by pulling drives, power supplies, and so on. We received every traps that we tested.

Re: Management server not getting SNMP trap from Windows 2008 Servers???

I currently have an open case with HP and i was told by HP support that this is a known bug and will be fixed in the next PSP release 8.10. Which should be out by end of June early July.

Can anyone confirm if this issue has been resolved with PSP 8.10
