PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Hi All,
There's a similar thread in the Performance Forum, but I know this forum is more active - so here goes.
I had PMP 4.0.1 working fine with HPSIM 5.0 SP4. Last night we updated SQLServer 2000 from SP3 to SP4.
Since then PMP will not start. Creating the pmplog.txt file I get;
2006-02-16 09:25:58: entered main
2006-02-16 09:25:58: Service Started
2006-02-16 09:26:03: ELM HTTP Server started
2006-02-16 09:26:03: After starting ELM, handle value of ELM is -> 00C800A8

Is there a fix? Anything I need to do?

I'm not too keen on removing all of PMP as we had collected some performance data for a few Servers. It would be a shame to lose it.

I tried just rerunning the pmp401.exe install but it just reports it is already installed and exits - so there's no repair option.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Hi Rob,

Are there any associated Windows or SQL events being generated too or does it just appear to be the PMP?

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Just a days experience with PMP so no real expert. Just testing the potential of PMP on one server with the free license. After updating PSP on my SIM server today I kept getting PMP sevice as failed,it was running just fine before the upgrade. What I did was just to restart the service from Services thorugh Administrative Tools.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Craig,
No events other than the Unexpected Termination event for PMP.
What I see from the SQL Manager is a single attach to the PMP Database. This seems to be active as the last TSQL Statement changes.
Also tried killing this process but nothing happened.

Albert,
No it's a bit more serious than that. The Service will not start no matter which Admin tool I use. Services, Hyena etc.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

There are no attachments to the database, the SQL Enterprise Management tool was displaying out of date info. Refreshed all the process starts and there is no connection.
Took the database offline and then online, but I still get the same failure.

Looks like a delete of PMP, plus removal of the databases and a reinstall.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

So if SP4 is implementing security options to stop named pipe hijacking (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815495) is it something that's blocking the connection?

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Could be, odd that it only affected PMP.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Removed PMP 4.0.1 and the PMP Database files. Reinstalled, PMP created the databases okay but still fails to start with the same error.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

On some advice from HP, it was recommened I update the HPSIM / PMP Server to 7.40B. As we were already at that version I did the next best thing and updated the SMH to 2.1.4. For some reason this has fixed the issue here, PMP started okay.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

I am having the same problem, and have tried everything on this list.
PMP worked ok after install but after a failed attempt to install VPM, and reboot, PMP service stops and will not restart.

log attached

Thanks
Colin

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Have you tried updating or reinstalling the SMH after the installs?
Not too sure why this works. If you already have the latest version you can force a reinstall.

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

I have updated and reinstalled the SMH and still getting the same problem. Have installed SIM and PMP onto a new server and all seems to be fine on there!

Re: PMP Fails to start after SQL Server update

Sorry, I cannot help then. The two issues I've had with PMP are those described above.

PMP Updates fail seem to remove the database but not the files and then fail on the install of the updated version and the one described above where an update of the SMH on the HPSI Server seemed to fix things.
