SIM 5.1 Orphan

SIM 5.1 Orphan

I have a newly installed server with 5.1 on it. I installed the OS with Essentials 7.1 including the VCA that was installed prior to the install of SIM. Once I got the repository populated, I installed the latest PSP (7.5) from the repository. Everything on the SIM server is green. I had a few network issues soon afterward and now it appears that I have an Orphan-180 in my list of servers. If I try to delete the orphan, it tells me that I can't delete the SIM server. Somehow this orphan is considered the same as the SIM server. There is another server listed in my All Servers group that lists my SIM server by name and all of the items are green on it. If I try to manage the orphan, it tells me the server does not exist. If I have a bad login, it shows up on the orphan not the server by name.

Re: SIM 5.1 Orphan

Why is the device named 'orphan_nnn'?
A system described as an orphan system is a system for which HP Systems Insight Manager detects
that both the IP address and name have been re-allocated to another system. Occasionally, this
reallocation can happen through simultaneous DHCP address assignment changes and a system
re-name. However, the most common cause is from using drive imaging software, such as Altiris.
When imaging systems, a globally unique identifier is used by the Web Agents and HP Systems
Insight Manager for identification purposes. On Windows systems, this problem can be avoided
by deleting the registry key entry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Compaq\CIMAgent\GUID
from the registry before creating the image. For systems that have already been imaged, stop the
foundation agents, remove the key, and restart the agents. A re-discovery will correct the problem.
You need to delete any old 'ORPHAN' systems from the HP Systems Insight Manager system list.

Re: SIM 5.1 Orphan

I think that about hits the nail on the head. I imaged the server with Alitiris so I will try exporting and deleting the key to see if that works.

Re: SIM 5.1 Orphan

It turns out that I do not have that registry key. I have the hklm\software\compaq\ tree but there is no CIMAgent key. I search around the keys that were in ...\compaq but did not find the GUID entry either. I do have a hklm\software\compaq insight agent\ key with a hostGUID entry though. I really don't want to hose up my installation because we need this to work right now. If you know what should work, please let me know.

Re: SIM 5.1 Orphan

Ok by stopping the foundation agents service and the SIM services, I was able to delete my orphan. I had not previously been able to delete it but now I can! My problem is solved. Thanks for your help.
