SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

I am having a problem with psp on my sim 5.0 server. I initially had psp 7.3 on the system with sim 4.2.
I uninstalled 4.2 and installed 5.0. That is when my problem started.
SIM 5 works fine but my psp runs very slow everytime I log in or select any option on its web page. I upgraded to psp 7.4 and the problem still persists. Everytime I select something, it takes about 10 or 15 seconds for something to happen. I get this popup from Microsoft Internet explorer on the sim server that saids...
"A timeout occurred while loading data for the HP system Managemnt Homepage which may result in missing or incomplete information. See the HP System Management Homepage log for addtional information."

SIM 5 is running on windows 2003 ...fully patched with latest service pack.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Maybe it is a VCRM problem, so try to start HP SIM without VCRM to make a quick check (stop VCRM service before starting HP SIM).

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

I had this too and it took me a while to figure it out. I deleted the automatically downloaded contents of the VCRM which totaled about 1.7GB of files and the timeouts went away. I then started the automatic download again and the problem occured again so it has something to do with the number of files or the size of the files. Now I don't use the automatic download feature, instead I manually download the files I want the VCRM to report on (about 500MB) and it has been rock solid since.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

I've had a similar problem with timeouts, usually for me they can be solved by restarting the System Mgmt Homepage service and the Version Control Agent service, at least in PSP 7.30, have not yet tested going up to 7.40 due to other problems.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Jeff Westwood...

Yes, I do have automatic download running (downloading everything) and will follow your advice when I get to the office this morning. Will report on results upon completion.

This message:
"A timeout occurred while loading data for the HP system Managemnt Homepage which may result in missing or incomplete information. See the HP System Management Homepage log for addtional information."

Tells you that one of the applications using the SYstem Management Homepage is taking too long to respond. If you go the SMH log there will be an entry in there that has the time in seconds (s) that it has taken the applications to respond. Look for one with the longest time and it probably is the application that is causing your problem. Most of the time it has to do with misconfigurations of either the VCA or the agent SNMP settings.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

To Jeff Westwood...

I moved to repository files from the configured location to another drive on the same server and rebooted with an empty repository. Problem still the same.
If I disable (stop services) the VCRM, the PSP works fine. Only when VCRM services have started does this problem occur.

I uninstalled VCRM and re-installed it with and empty repository. Problem still the same.

To Rich Purvis....
I check that log but all that exists is the authentication entries when I logged into PSP.

One other thing to note in PSP...when I select any tab, I get this time out. When I select any function anywhere, I get this timeout as long as VCRM is started.
When I select VCRM, I get an empty page...and this is after I re-installed VCRM.
It looks like a problem with VCRM for the timeouts.

Am I looking at re-installing the entire product ? If so, should I be removing left over files after using add-and-remove programs to uninstall psp, sim, vcrm and anything else that has to do with this.

Or...is there a fix for this issue.

Just in case no one hears back from me...
I have to leave within an hour (by 12 noon central time..usa)and will most likely be out tomorrow, but will continue with issue on Thursday. Will be monitoring much appreciated responses up to then.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Hi Val

I think we can safely say this problem is related to the VCRM service. I did a complete uninstall and reinstall to try and get rid of this problem but it came back. It's only been a week since I disabled the automatic downloads so I can't be certain it is fixed for good but so far so good. Hopefully HP will issue an update for the VCRM that addresses this issue.

Regards

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Jeff,

I am unable to disable the automatic downloads because I can't bring up the VCRM screen to select this configuration.
If I knew where it stored this configuration, I could verify if this is disabled. Don't know if it is stored as a config file or in the registry.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Szabolcs Petho...

I checked your thread and it is very similiar to my problem. I'm both glad and sad that others are having this problem. I will check out my server per your thread when I get back to work on Thursday to see if it's identical. Sorry to have responded to your answer so slowly but too many things happening over here.
Does anyone know whether HP is aware of this issue. Has HP offered a fix for this issue.

Thanks for your insight (no pun intended). I will respond on Thursday with results.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

I'm not sure if this is related or if it is something else, but I noticed a new format on the downloaded files.

Previously VCRM has downloaded all component parts as separate files, now I noticed the new PSP 7.40 being downloaded as a complete bundle.

I disabled autodownload to prevent this and deleted the file since when it is present it takes forever to load the VCRM webpage, when deleted the page comes up directly.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Mikael R├Г┬╢nnb├Г┬дck....

As I stated earlier in this message thread...
I have removed all files in the repository and problem still persists.

Wonder if HP is monitoring this thread. Maybe they have an answer to what seems to be a problem with SIM 5.0 release.

Thanks anyway.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

The comment was made that the format of the PSP posted to the web is different. That is the case, it is now a full self extracting compressed file. The VCRM should be trying to download and uncompress the components into your repository. If you delete that file you say that the VCRM comes up ok? You may want to try to go to the HP web download page for the 7.40 PSP and pull down the compressed file into your repository and see if VCRM will come up then, just a suggestion maybe the file got corrupted on the autodownload? Again, that is all speculation just trying to come up awith an explanation for the odd VCRM behavior.

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Does anybody have SIM 5 working properly without any issues with VCRM or PSP on the SIM Server ?

Re: SIM 5 and PSP 7.4/7.3 Timeout Errors

Thanks all for the help.

Found the solution from another message thread with the same problem.

According to Thorsten Schmitt on message thread...
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=960881

He wrote...
the timeout problems and problems with the VCA are resolved with the brandnew SMH version 2.1.3.132 (21 Sep 05)
It can be found here:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23560.html

In addition to this...I thought I removed all files from the repository but there was one left that was showing up as an open file in task manager. It was..
PSP-7.40.W2K3.i386.EXE

Once I killed that process and rebooted, all was OK. I even copied back to the repository all files that I had automatically downloaded except for above file (16 PSP's and 873 components)and all worked well after files were cataloged. Not sure if it was the stuck file in the repository that was giving me the problem...or the new System Management HomePage (that I downloaded). But it is fixed.

Hope this information can be useful for anyone else that runs into this problem.
And once again...

Thanks to all that helped.
