System Type UNKNOWN
I've posted this recently and had some helpful advice but I'm still getting this on most of my servers and it is driving me up the wall!!
The servers are running the management agents fine, the SNMP community string matches on HP SIM to the managed server. The managed server is set to allow SNMP from any host, I've tried configure and repair a number of times successfully but system type is still unknown.
The managed servers trap destination includes the CMS and the local host.
Any more advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: System Type UNKNOWN
What kind of servers are these?
If they're HP Servers and SNMP is correct then it should be able to recognise them using just SNMP.
Unknown means HPSIM has detected a management protocol of some kind but not been able to gather the information it requires.
If you click on the server name, expand Product Description then you'll see the Management Protocols it's discovered.
SNMP community names are case-sensitive. So check that the community names entered under the Global Protocol settings exactly match the community names entered on the remote servers snmp set up.
Form HPSIM you can also go to Options->Manage System Types, use New, just hit the Retrieve From System button and in the section listed enter the Server (name or IP) and either use the "public" or enter what you think is the community name and hit Get Response. This should return an OBJECTIDENTIFIER. It's a fairly good test of snmp access using what you think is the correct community name.

You might find the ProLiant Management Tip of the Month from a recent issue of the ISS Technology Update newsletter helpful as well:

Re: System Type UNKNOWN
Thank you for the replies.
For one of the 'unknown' servers I have checked in the Product description and only:
HTTP and SMH are showing.
Therefore it is not using SNMP as you say.
I tried the test from OPTIONS - Managed System Type and I do get a object idenfitier response when I put the server name in.
So, I 'think' this is telling me that SNMP communication is working fine to the server, it certainly seems to be I can also do an SNMP test from the homepage. However, it is not being used as a protocol for certain servers??
Please help, you have helped me get further with this but now need to know how to get the servers communication to HP SIM CMS via SNMP. Not sure why this is ok for some servers and not others.
