Task doesn't start
Hi everyone,
I installed HP SIM 6.2 on Windows 2008 server.
I configured it to monitor an event collection called 'Important ProLiant Events' and send SNMP traps to given destinations.
To do so, I entered Options -> Events -> Automatic Event Handling -> New task; I filled all the required fields, including SNMP trap destinations. I added new time filter (all day long) for it.
Right now, even though this task has been enabled for almost a week already, the status in 'Last Run' column is still 'Never'.
Can anyone advise me how to make the task actually run?

Re: Task doesn't start
Not much info to go on. Can you post a screen cap of the details for the event?

Pictures '1.png' & '2.png' show the definition of the event.
Picture '3.png' shows how I set actions for this event.
Picture '4.png' shows the time filter I spcified.
Anything more you need?

Re: Task doesn't start
A couple of things, now that I understand what you are wanting to do.
1) These aren't tasks that run until an event is received then if they meet the conditions you defined SIM will process that event and run the handler.
2) You are running fairly narrow range of events, I would open it up and plan your handler around exclusions instead of inclusions. A best practice for most environments is to Create your event handler by status Critical and Major then filter out events that you don't want. That will be more condusive to not missing anything that may be important. It isn't an exacting when you build a handler around subcatagories. Not everything will trigger a particular sub-catagory that you would expect. Customers that complain about not getting events then experience an unplanned outage blame SIM and more often than not it is because they have defined their event handlers in the manner you have. SIM only alerted them according to what "they thought they wanted" in the end it wasn't at all what they wanted.
3) Since it appears you want 24x7 I would uncheck the time filter, removing that from the equation. It is 24x7 by default.
After all of that you should be able to execute an SNMP test trap from a node which will come through as a major event - that should initiate that task.

Re: Task doesn't start
Thanks for the information.
Now I have to spend some time searching for proper events/traps for ProLiant servers in the HP SIM collection.
I'm supposed to send information about HDD and CPU state and so on, and send it to given TeMIP server. It'll take a while to find all the MIBs names that are required ;)
Anyway, when I chose 'Severity is Critical' and I want to chose event types (for me these are OIDs names) I have a section called 'APPLICATION' at the beginning of the list and there I have an event called '(SNMP) Test Trap (50001)'. Can this be this test trap which can start the task when I finish all the configuration?

Re: Task doesn't start
Have you had HDD and Proc Events that have happened since you set up your task?
Ah, a little more info ;)
Since you are getting that specific, here is an approach I'd take to validate and test the integrity of the process. Instead of taking a shot in the dark building it out and hoping you got it all, build out another handler that is just critical and major to email you then if you get HDD or Proc events the forwarding task didn't forward add it to that task - and build it up as you go.
It would be cool if there were a umbrella type category for all HDD events, all Proc events, etc.
I believe that is the test trap for the SNMP traps.

Re: Task doesn't start
Thanks for the advice, but I want to know few more things.
I specified read community and did the same for SNMP native pack in Windows Server 2008. Should I do anything more to be sure SNMP will be able to send the traps?
Is there a way within HP SIM to check from which MIB given event comes from?

Re: Task doesn't start
You need 2 things, really 3
1) HP SNMP Agent
2) Windows SNMP Service properties must allow SIM to access the SNMP via Read Only community string and that community string needs to have the Trap Destination set to the CMS
3) In SIM the System Page in the Management Protocols row of the description table must show SNMP1.0 if it doesn't you have a problem either with the nodes SNMP properties or the CMS doesn't have the community string defined in the system credentials, sign-in credentials or global credentials.
I suppose you could toss in a 4th being a firewall.
You can look at these docs as well. These are the SNMP Trap Reference Guides (Win and Lin) - they are a bit dated, but for the most part the info is relevant and may help you out a bit more.

Re: Task doesn't start
1) I think HP SNMP Agent was installed with HP SIM 6.2. Am I wrong?
2) I specified both community string and destination IP within SIM. I specified read only community string for the traps in Windows SNMP Service. How can I make it allow HP SIM to access this community?
3) I specified all SNMP data in Options -> Protocol Settings -> System Protocol Settings and Options -> Protocol Settings -> Global Protocol Settings. When I access 'Global Credentials' section from within 'SNMP Settings' section in 'Global Protocol Settings', I have SNMP Credentials filled (SNMP community string), but Sign-in credentials are empty. I don't see what I can put there.
I don't have SNMP 1.0 in 'Management Protocols' in the description table in 'System Page'.
Please advise.

Re: Task doesn't start
I performed the same configuration on another server and now HP SIM sees SNMP 1.0 protocol.
I chose few test traps among other traps.
I removed time filter (if I understood correctly, it means the time filter is 24/7 then).
Still the task status says that it never run.
How can I make the task start?
