Windows and SNMP

Is it possible to use HP SIM 5 without SNMP, especially without setting SNMP Sets? Our corporate security policy expressly forbids setting of the SNMP Write community string. What functionality is lost in SIM without this SNMP Sets enabled?

Re: Windows and SNMP

Yes it's possible.

Your SIM will discover your machines with ICMP protocol. The machines will appear on your SIM interface.

But you'll not have any information about the machine (ex: ML350 Gx, or Operating System).

To discover your machines, use the option DISCOVERY

Hi Bill,

I'd agree - the only thing HPSIM will really monitor then is if the system is reachable or not via pinging.

To gather any additional info you would at least need an SNMP Read community string on each server?

What functionality do I lose by removing the write community string, leaving only the read community?
