Re: hi everybody
I'm pretty sure the part numbers don't work like that; do you have some information that suggests that they do?
You can look up part numbers here - http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main
What is it you are hoping to do by breaking the part numbers down?

Re: hi everybody
according to partsurfer this is
AB397A HP Srvr rx2620 4GB DDR Quad Memory
B9106AA HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environment (Basic environment - no additional products included)
At least in the past Axxxx stands for enterprise hardware products, Bxxxx software (among others)...
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: hi everybody
What you are talking about is a significant part number, one which is assigned based on what it applies to, and which can to some extent be decoded. Not everybody uses those; HP does not.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Part_number for a discussion of the two types. Significant part numbers tend to be longer. If you look at the HP part numbers, and the number of possible parts, it should be fairly obvious that they just couldn't be significant ones.
