HP 3000 UPS

I'm trying to configure my UPS network management card with the appropriate strings. For some reason, when I attempt to setup the SNMP traps, it won't accept special characters, i.e., an underscore, or dollar sign ($).
But when I enter something random in without special characters, it takes it fine. Will it take special charcters?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
