DL100 Stroage Server problem
We have had 2 different DL100-1TB storage server with the same problem. The unit make a fairly loud screeching sound which seems to be from one of the hard disks. The sound stops after a while and the event viewer says that a drive failed, but is now rebuilding. This has happened on two different units. Is there any known problem with the 250GB SATA drives?
Thanks,
Ron Volkman

Re: DL100 Stroage Server problem
Hi Ron,
The screeching sound is actually soming from the Adaptec RAID controller. It screams to let you know that the RAID sets have become degraded in some way. I know of no particular issues with 250GB S-ATA drives. They do fail at a higher interval than SCSI drives. I have seen instances where the Hot-Swap connection is not completed 100% correctly, but that mainly resulted in a disk not being seen not a disk failing and coming back. You can try re-seating the drives next time you shut the server down, this should clean the contacts.

Re: DL100 Stroage Server problem
So perhaps the RAID controller has an alarm device of some kind on it. One of the disks gets out of sync for some reason and is "failed" by the controller. The disk returns to normal status shortly after that and the controller rebuilds it.
Perhaps that's what has happened. It only happened once on each unit over a 2-month period.
Thanks for your input.
