Difference between Host Bus Adapter and Smart Array Controller

Difference between Host Bus Adapter and Smart Array Controller

I bought a card PCI HP H222 Host Bus Adapter (650926-B21) for a server HP ProLiant DL 380p G8 (642119-001).

Also I have a tape drive HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1760 SAS, I need to connect the drive to the server.

Previously had this tape drive connected to a server HP ProLiant DL360 G6 whit a card PCI HP Smart Array P212 Controller (462834-B21).

Now I have the question, is it possible to connect it with a card like to buy?, because not know what the difference between the two cards

Re: Difference between Host Bus Adapter and Smart Array Controller

An HBA connects the server to something - without much intelligence.

The H222 basically provides the server with a two SAS ports, one internal and one external.

Some Smart Array controllers connect the server to disks, disk shelves or tape drives and if you connect disks to it you can use the smart array features like RAID.
