I'm going to create a report in regards to permissions on folders in the directory tree (NTFS format on Windows 2003).
Currently I'm using "xcalcs" to find the groups and their access level and then "showmbrs" to find members of each group.
I was wondering if there is a tool that makes this process easier.

Have a look at the tool Permission Analyzer. It scans the network and saves all the information in a database. After that, it can generate overviews of access rights per user or group:
