SBS 2003 licensing probelms.

I started receiving notification that we are nearing the limit of per server license. So i go into licensing and add the remaining 5-pack CAL. Upon clicking add (from the wizard) i receive this error:

The specified license code cannot be added because it will exceed the 15 client limit for windows server 2003 small business server

with only an OK as an option to close the window.

i tried adding a bad key, and was returned with the notification that the key is invalid, so i know the key i was entering was correct.

any help on this?

Re: SBS 2003 licensing probelms.

had i known there was a difference between
Winblows Server 2003 for Small Business Server and Small Business Server 2003, then i might have been able to find out that our POS OS only allows 15 clients.

GRRRRR, my reseller is gonna here from me!

and thanks for selling me 20 licences for software that only supports/allows 15 :@

the second last question in Product Information is:

Q - What is Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server?

A - Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server is designed for partners who want to deliver a server solution based on Windows Server 2003 as part of their product offering. It provides the same version of Windows Server 2003 that is used by Windows Small Business Server 2003, but it has none of the added features included in the standard edition or premium edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:

â ¢ Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.

â ¢ Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory forest.

â ¢ Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.

â ¢ A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.

â ¢ Each additional server must have a Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.

Re: SBS 2003 licensing probelms.

Matthew:

Sounds like a terrible product (unless you paid only a few hundred dollars for it).

You are absolutely correct to go after your reseller on this. He/she should not have sold you that product without a thorough explanation of its limitations. In light of the CALS sold with the product, I'm thinking the reseller didn't even know what he was selling. If the reseller doesn't bend over backwards to make this right, I'd complain to Redmond.

There may be an upgrade path. I'll see what I can find.
