Server 2003 loses Microsoft network

I have a new server with 2003 loaded. It is part of a NT 4.0 domain but is not a domain controller. I had to change the IP address of the server for the firewall. Now the server loses its connection to the other servers in the domain. It seems to happen every few minutes. I can map a network drive and when I click on it sometimes it opens and others it gives a error message. The servers use internal IP addresses and TCP_IP. The new server can access the internet. What can I do to fix the problem?

One which side is the connection lost?

i.e. can the 2003 server still ping the other servers, or the other servers still ping the 2003 server, or absolutely no connnection between at all?

When the connections are broken, can the 2003 server still ping the firewall?

Check out WINS and DNS to make sure that the old IP address of the server is not present and that the new IP address is pointing to the correct server only.

When it happens you cannot ping in or out. It also happens ojn a reguler schedule of every 10 minutes or so. The server loses the connection then pick it up again after a few minutes. I tried adding a second nic card but it does the same thing. I have another server running 2003 with no problems.

Make sure in device manager, that you're not allowing the NIC to self power off to conserve power.

Are you running any jobs that would take the full CPU for a short period?

Running any 3GL screen savers?

Beyond the above, I haven't heard of any "problems" regarding NIC's lately.

Both servers on the same patch level?
