Server hangs

I have the following configaration"

proliant 6000, with 2 Xeon II 450 1mb.
redundent 3100es array controllers. System partion is mirrored 18 gb drives. I loaded 2003 SBS using 5.50 smartstart and loaded the current PPS 7.10 from web site. All went smoothly without any problems.

I configure server for users and workstations withour a problem.

After OS loaded without problems, the system would hang whenever clients would log onto network. This would happen almost instantly. I tried reload OS but system would still hang.

Any help would be great!!

Re: Server hangs

Hi Sal,
Can't say exactly but i doubt about your NIC card or Network Configuration you are doing.
Your NIC in the server may be faulty. Also check your network configuration parameters throughly. Check the Patch Cord's as well.

Hope that helps.

Re: Server hangs

Selvan,

The details:

I was using NT4 SP6 with no problems on my server.

I was trying to upgrade to SBS 2003. As I stated, the OS loaded without problems, and I loaded the PSP 7.10, with no errors. Each workstation (total of 5) was added to the domain without any problems (this was on a one to one basis, meaning that only one workstation was connected to the server at a time). On Monday when my staff arraived, the server would hang, and after 10 min, would ASR, but would do it again whenever anyone (more than one person) would contact. The server would not leave anything in the dump files (I had microsoft check those). The system drive (mirrored) would show the "read" lights on steady (both drives). After the ASR, the OS would reboot system, but the server would hang again after just a few mins. I wipped the system partition, and reload the OS from start, but the same problem remained.

I finally "ghosted" my system back to NT4, and have have had no more problems, with either the nic card or arrays controllers. I have two XEON III 500Hz that I will install, since that was the configation that HP recommends, but I really don't think that was the problem.

I did check the driver for the the 3100ES, but they were the current drives.

Any ideas, before I try loading 2003 SBS again?

Regards and thanks,

Sal

Re: Server hangs

Good. It could be the problem of either on licence or Scsi card Drivers.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/events/windows2003srv/tnt1-74.mspx

or

check the attached document.

Are you doing inplace upgrade or Migrate.

Please check the eventlog and get back.

You cannot do in-place upgrade of NT4 to SBS2003. You have to do migration only.

Re: Server hangs

SELVAM,

I was accually doing a clean install using smartstart 5.50.

I wipe the server clean, the OS and data, and start "anew". I figured that was the best way to start, and I wanted to "clean up" the OS from NT4.

With SBS 2003 loaded, there was never anything in the eventlog or memory dump. Even Microsoft was very suprized by that!

I have read elsewhere on this page that people have had similer problem only after loading the PSP after installing SBS. I was thinking of tring that.

I am waite for a current version of ghost (my version could not read the new NTFS files) and then I will be tring the upgrade again.

If you have any other insights, please let me know.

Regards and thanks,

Sal
