Slow copy

I have a DL 385 g3 with windows server 2003 enterprise R2 x386. when copying to the server the speed is ok but if i copy from the server it takes ages. e.g copy 1* 180mb file to the server takes 2 min. copy the same file from the server and it says 84 min. if you look at the diags it is only transfering the copying from files at 789kbs (broadband speed) all the drivers are fine and upto daye. i have ordered some new CAT6 cables to see if it is the cable any ideas. the Nics are NC373i cards.

cheers

Re: Slow copy

Sounds like a duplex mismatch. The server is probably running half duplex and the switch full duplex. This will cause the speed to be quite nice into the server but out from the server will be much much slower because the half duplex setting will think it is seeing lots of collisions. This is a common problem when one side is set to 100 Full Duplex and the other is set to Automatic.

You would think that Automatic would set it to 100 Full but it is not allowed to by the original spec. It can only go to 100 Full when the other side is also set to Automatic.

Cure would be to set both sides the same. Either both 100 Full or both Automatic. In the old days Automatic had some problems and was not 100% reliable so some network admins would set things manually. Automatic is working pretty good these days so I don't think it's a good idea to use manual settings any more since it causes more problems than it avoids.
