windows 2003 std beyond 4gb memory

Hi,

We have a Proliant ML350 G5 with 5Gb physical memory and it was detected by the server harware. However, the Windows 2003 Standard operating system is only detecting 4Gb memory. I read from notes in the Internet that the OS can only support up to 4Gb.

Question is, is there a way or tool or tweak to make the OS detect memory larger than 4Gb?

Your help/tips will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed

Re: windows 2003 std beyond 4gb memory

I think Exchange and sql server can use memory over the 4GB limit in standard edition, otherwise upgrade to enterprise edition
see

and

Hi Ed,
The maximum memory support by Win 2003 STD Edition is 4 GB.
I heard about /3gb switch, but never used. Kindly find artical regarding /3gb switch on net. Hope they will help u.

Re: windows 2003 std beyond 4gb memory

Hi,

w2k3 EE needes the /pae to access the memory over 4Gb. The SE needs the /PAE only if there are exactly 4GB and the OS reports 3.25 (or not all 4GB)... in other words, you can never get Standard edition to recognize/use more than 4GB

There is nothing you can change to get the 32bit edition of Server 2003 to address more than 4GB.

64bit will natively address MUCH more than that, but you need to have 64bit hardware in order to run a 64bit OS.

Re: windows 2003 std beyond 4gb memory

Oops... left out the word "Standard"

Windows Server 2003 Standard will not address more than 4GB.

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise can by using the /PAE switch.
