Windows Storage Server

Hi, I am planning to buy a Hp proliant Server with Windows Storage server. Can anyone tell me if this server can exist on its own without a Windows 2003/2008 server. All I need is to be able to use this server as a share on the internet where some of my clients can use the space. Also my clients will need to VPN into the server via windows PPTP, so this feature is essential as well. I want to provide the server with a Static IP and share it on the internet via VPN as a Network Share.

Thanks.

Re: Windows Storage Server

The HP Storage Server comes with Windows Server 2003 Storage Server edition. (The OS).

So if you are familiar with Windows, you have the skills to configure the server for the type of connections you need.

If you remove the OS... all you have is a piece of hardware that can do nothing but turn on and use up resources (power, cooling, etc).

Re: Windows Storage Server

Thanks Steven. I understand that. But I need to know if the OS, Windows Storage server can have the same features as a normal Windows 2003/2008 server as far as VPN and File Server is concerned

Re: Windows Storage Server

The OS IS Windows Server 2003... Storage Edition.

It comes pre-configured to serve up files via several methods...

ftp, cifs, nfs, etc are all available including standard windows shares.

You can go into "Add/Remove Software" and add any of the normal items just like on Windows Server 2003 Standard/Enterprise.

Re: Windows Storage Server

Thanks. What about PPTP VPN. Does this OS have that feature as well
