Re: SAN Migration

Option 1:Use XP24000 external storage feature of connecting other vendor arrays.

Option 2: Host data Migration, Creating New Luns in Arrays and migrate data.

Does both the Arrays are located in the same DC.

Re: SAN Migration

HI there ....

Another option i often uses is to use Symantec Storage foundation basic package, which now has become free. Using this nice featured package you can mount similar size and raided LUN's, from the new XP as the original ones on your NETAPP, and then inside the storage foundation map them up as mirrors. Now the Storage foundation will in the background without any needed stop of applikations or so copy data from the netapp based luns to the XP Luns and when ever the mirror is synchronized you can break the mirror and your now running on the XP based LUNS - without any downtime.

I often uses this between non-heterogene systems and it works so nice, and it works with a wide range of systems...

look for more info and download on:

Have fun !!

Re: SAN Migration

I don't think XP external storage software will work for this migration at all. First because of support on NetApp product and second it's not for the migration from the existing data to XP (or from XP).

Host based migration is the best option suited in this configuration and as Thomas suggested a mirroring tool will be better than using copy/paste method. (In past, I preferred Softek-TDMF for the same reason).

If downtime permitted then backup restore will be third (least preferred option). Perform the full back on primary volume, restore on secondary volume (offline) and then take an incremental backup on primary and during the downtime, apply it on the secondary volume.
