The next generation of data protection services: HPE Backup and Recovery Service
Cloud native HPE Backup and Recovery Service is backup as a service, and is specifically designed for hybrid cloud. Delivered through Data Services Cloud Console, this new HPE GreenLake service redefines backup and recovery with the simplicity and flexibility of the cloud experience.
As the value and business criticality of data increases, the challenges of backup, recovery and managing data are tougher than ever. Exploding data growth, demanding recovery SLA requirements, and an evolving threat and compliance landscape are putting pressure on costs and intensifying risk. What’s more, as you transform to a hybrid cloud operating model, protecting and managing apps and data across your datacenter, private cloud, and public cloud infrastructure can prove increasingly complex.
It’s time for a new approach to backup, one that enables you to meet SLAs in hybrid cloud environments, simplifying your infrastructure and driving significant value for your organization. I’m excited to let you know that today we’re introducing an approach to backup that is effortless, efficient, and secure: HPE Backup and Recovery Service.
Rigid infrastructure and tight IT budgets leave data exposed
A recent IDC customer survey shows that nearly 40% of organizations expect their data to grow more than 50% every year, and that data is becoming increasingly more vulnerable. In the last 3 years, 50% of organizations have suffered an unrecoverable data loss. Ransomware protection is ranked as the most challenging area of data protection, and it becomes even more daunting in the face of shrinking IT budgets.
But tight budgets alone should not discourage business leaders from modernizing data protection for their organizations.
In fact, that reticence might end up costing the business more in the long run. Organizations that hang on to older backup technology don't have the tools they need to face today's threats. Rigid, siloed infrastructures aren't agile or scalable enough to keep up with fluctuations in data requirements, and they are based on an equally rigid backup approach. In an era where cash is king and on-site resources are particularly limited, organizations that postpone data protection modernization just might find that they are blocking the company's progress.
This situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity for organizations: a challenge to simplify how you safeguard one of your most important and valuable assets, and an opportunity to:
- Protect data from ransomware attacks, while complying with data protection regulations
- Simplify backup and recovery operations to make it easier to protect data across every SLA
- Align infrastructure to actual use so that you will be able to manage cash flow.
Traditional backup approaches are not designed for today’s dynamic and distributed business environment. They are time-consuming and costly to manage. They can’t easily scale to meet progressive, changing needs. They require upfront capex, expensive software licensing, and costly over-provisioning. And finally, yesterday’s approaches fall short when it comes to neutralizing modern threats such as ransomware and other sophisticated malwares.
Data protection designed for hybrid cloud
Introduced as a part of the next generation of HPE GreenLake for data protection, HPE Backup and Recovery Service is backup as a service built for hybrid cloud. Initially available to protect VMware workloads deployed on HPE Alletra storage, this new service redefines backup and recovery with the simplicity and flexibility of the software delivered as a service. Policy-based orchestration and automation lets you setup the protection of your virtual machines (VMs) in a few simple steps, in less than 5 minutes. All backups will then run automatically so that you can be sure you can recover your data when you need it.
Data protection in a VMware environment involves protecting large collections of VMs. Most of the time, these large collections of VMs needs similar protection SLAs. It is a tedious job for an administrator to apply protection and monitor jobs for these virtual machines individually. HPE Backup and Recovery Service encapsulate backup targets into the Protection Groups to enable consistent protection at scale. These Protection Groups enable the user to apply protection for multiple VMs or datastores in a single operation to automate the protection of VMs.
The cloud native service eliminates complexity, freeing you from the day-to-day hassles of backup infrastructure. There are no additional media servers, appliances, or backup targets to manage, and public cloud storage is fully managed and scaled automatically by the service. Consumption-based pricing, cloud operational efficiency, and ultra-efficient data reduction technologies work together to lower the cost of protecting your data.
Managed through the Data Services Cloud Console, this modern, flexible approach to backup automatically retains local snapshots for instant data restores, performs local on-premises backups for rapid data recovery, and utilizes cloud backups for cost-effective, long term data retention.
Effortless, efficient, and secure data protection delivered as a service
While alternative backup services exist, HPE Backup and Recovery Service is unique and can drive significantly more value for your organization.
Cloud simplicity and unified management for ease of use
Traditional backup approaches can become notoriously complex over time. On average, we’ve found that customers use several separate backup tools to manage their backup and recovery operations in the hybrid cloud. This massively fragmented approach slows down overall innovation because it requires configuring, initializing, and managing separate operating systems, and establishing best practices for each.
Unified management in HPE Backup and Recovery Service makes the process virtually effortless. You can easily manage your hybrid backup and recovery operations edge to cloud from anywhere through a single, cloud-native console. Policy-based orchestration and automation enable you to protect VMs in minutes through a few simple steps, eliminating complexities and automating your backup infrastructure.
The new data protection service provides the flexibility to meet all your RTO and RPO requirements, whether you want on-premises backups for rapid recovery or granular local snapshots that allow you to restore data instantly. The service can also provide backups to the public cloud, a cost-effective option for long-term data retention.
Highly efficient, cost-optimized service
The HPE Catalyst protocol is a proven technology, with tens of thousands of customers leveraging its benefits over the last 10 years, and is a key feature in the HPE Backup and Recovery Service. HPE Catalyst provides super-efficient backup capacity utilization with source side deduplication, making the most efficient use of network bandwidth.
HPE Catalyst ensure that only new, unique chunks of data are sent across the network to the local and cloud Protection Stores, reducing data writes – which in turn reduce the demands on bandwidth. This highly efficient source-side deduplication, and advanced compression deliver unmatched storage efficiency in this service, as compared to alternate solutions.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service is cost-efficient, too. First, the pay-as-you consume service eliminates upfront capex expenses with predictable consumption-based billing, and elastic scaling that aligns cost to business value.
Secondly, there are no fees for restoring your data. Public clouds often charge a fee to move your data from the cloud to your on-premises infrastructure. HPE doesn’t charge egress fees. We do not charge you for data restore (egress), nor for backup (ingress), nor for search (operations). And there’s no additional management cost for cloud storage – all of these are covered by the service. It’s our belief that you should have access to your data when you need it. It is your data, after all.
Ransomware protection and always-on security
Security is always a hot topic in conversations with customers who are looking to protect their data in the hybrid cloud, which is why HPE Backup and Recovery Service was engineered to provide higher levels of security than any other backup as a service offering in the market today. Using HPE Catalyst makes this service efficient at protecting backup data from cyberattacks like ransomware, because it keeps data hidden from attackers. Ransomware can’t infect and encrypt what it is inaccessible to it. HPE Backup and Recovery Service takes advantage of this feature, creating backup stores which are not directly accessible by the operating system. Backup images are made inaccessible to ransomware, thereby ensuring data backup security and enabling reliable data restores.
With built-in, configurable Protection Templates HPE Backup and Recovery Service enables you to automatically protect VMs and helps you meet data protection regulatory requirements.
Modernizing your data protection
Backup and recovery services are business-critical tools you will need as you continue on your IT modernization journey. Yesterday’s one-size-fits-all approaches won’t protect your data in the current threat landscape. You need a backup strategy that aligns with your business objectives, and an effortless, efficient, and secure approach to data protection.
HPE GreenLake for data protection offer end-to-end data protection to safeguard your data and improve business resilience. Backup service with HPE Backup and Recovery Service and HPE disaster recovery service with the recently acquired Zerto, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, give you the flexibility to modernize data protection – from rapid recovery to ransomware protection to long term data retention – either on premises or in the cloud with operational simplicity, meeting every SLA at the right stage of the data lifecycle for the right cost.
I'm excited about the coming months and the enhancements that are in store as we keep innovating. HPE engineers are already working to build out this new backup service to support other applications, workloads, and platforms in the future, and we will continue to develop new capabilities to raise the bar on simplicity and user experience. We strongly believe in the technology HPE has built and delivered over the years with the goal of enabling you to protect your data across the hybrid cloud.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service will be available in November 2021, with an option to try it free for 30 days and experience the benefits for yourself. In the meantime, you can learn more at VMworld about how you can protect your data and applications with HPE. VMworld session: Defend and Protect Your Data – from Edge to Cloud with HPE GreenLake.
