Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
Hello,
I have a HP 5120A Product Number JE069A that I an umable to restore to factory.
When I connect via console cable, it boots directly to the boot mentu. I have tried re-uploading the Bootrom .bin file via xmodem which completed but this did not resolve the issue. I have tried selecting 5 to restore config, 7 to skip current confirmation but have no luck.
Please advise best way to proceed with restoring so I can get command line access to the switch.
Press Ctrl-B to enter Boot Menu... 0
Auto-booting...
No correct default file to boot!
BootRom password: Not required. Please press Enter to continue.
Password recovery capability is enabled.
BOOT MENU
1. Download application file to flash
2. Select application file to boot
3. Display all files in flash
4. Delete file from flash
5. Restore to factory default configuration
6. Enter bootrom upgrade menu
7. Skip current configuration file
8. Reserved
9. Set switch startup mode
0. Reboot
Ctrl+F: Format File System
Ctrl+D: Enter Debugging Mode
Ctrl+T: Enter Board Test Environment
Enter your choice(0-9):

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
Hi SMCDonald1
- Boot the 5120 into the menu
- Choose Option 2 to list all of the OS files
- You can then choose the one that you want to boot and set as the main startup file
- Exit back and choose option 0 to reboot
BUT that is not the factory default. That will only get you able to boot because it doesn't know what to boot at this point.
If you want to factory default the configuration, use option 5 and that will wipe out the config.
Regards,
David

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
Thanks for the response. I went into this selection and there are no applicaiton or configuraiton files on switch.
Enter your choice(0-2): 1
No File In flash Filesystem!
Free Space: 15603712 bytes
Select application file to boot
1. Set application files
2. Set configuration files
0. Return
Is there somewhere I can download the application files and upload via console cable?

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
smcdonald1,
What happens if you try to TFTP the binary to the switch? Can it get there and then set it to be the next boot version? Use option 1 to do either TFTP or FTP file transfer and see if it is seen by option 3.
If it still doesn't show up, I would use CTRL+F to reformat the file system and then download it again. You will lose whatever files may be there though. Do option 3 and see if there is anything on the flash that might be important.
Regards,
David

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
HI David,
I formatted the flash on the switch. What is the default IP address of the Switch so I can connect the TFTP Server?

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
To this point I have formatted the flash and can only boot into the boot menu and cannot get to a command prompt to set an ip for FTP or TFTP. I have downloaded the latest firmware
A5120EI-BTM-621.btm and A5120EI-CMW520-R2222P08.bin
FIrmware files were uploaded to the switch via the console using xmodem. Once finished they do not appear in the file list.
Is there anything else that I can try to get this switch restored?
Thanks

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
You can TFTP or FTP through the bootware menus. I believe that it is the Ethernet or network settings. I don't have a switch in front of me at the moment. That is how you will get it onto the box since there is no software on it right now.
Next time I'm in the lab I can take a look if you'd like.

David

Re: Unable to restore HP A5120 switch to factory
P.S. As part of the TFTP settings in Bootware you will be able to specify the TFTP server IP, the switch IP, switch mask, and switch default gateway. You will also then specify what file you are looking for.

David
