Re: HPUX Oracle 10g multipath
This depends on;
How do want to setup your raw volumes/disks? Do you want to use the raw disk device files or do want to create raw logical volumes for ASM?
Native 11.23 pvlinks (alternate path) is only possible with LVM, and there is no load balancing between the paths.
With Secure Path you can use the raw disk device files for ASM and you will have load balancing for a better performance.
Hope this helps,
Robert-Jan

Re: HPUX Oracle 10g multipath
Actually, there is a limited option of load balancing by manually spreading primary PV paths across HBAs and storage ports. However, with Secure Path, this can be done with much less effort and more effectively.

Re: HPUX Oracle 10g multipath
Oracle ASM needs total control of disk. It removes this from the systems administrator on the OS and hands it to Oracle.
My read on the documentation is that it will work with Secure Path or without it.

Re: HPUX Oracle 10g multipath
Is it PVlink better for this case if I don'[t care the load balance and Oracle 10g RAC can use the PVlink as well?

SolutionStorage choices with Oracle can be confusing - throw RAC into the equation and they get more confusing. Let's take it as a given that you are going to use ASM and work from there...
- If you are just implementing a standalone (i.e. non-RAC) database, then you have 2 choices:
i) Use Secure Path for MPIO
ii) Create LVM configurations and use PVlinks for MPIO (allbeit this is only failover rather than load balancing)
- If you are implementing a RAC database your choices are:
i) Use Secure Path for MPIO
ii) If you are also using Serviceguard Extension for RAC (SGeRAC), then you could again use LVM (actually SLVM which allows concurrent access to logical volmes from more than onde node) and use PVlinks for MPIO
If you aren't using SGeRAC, and are just using Oracle Clusterware then your *only* choice for MPIO is Secure Path
Honestly it amazes me that people don't check all this out before costing their solutions...

Re: HPUX Oracle 10g multipath
If its oracle 10GR2 and you decide to use CFS and SGeRAC then you can use the multipathing that vxvm provides.
