Re: Oracle 8.1.7
it is always recommended to install the latest available patch.
hence, in your case, it will be:
patch: 2376472
Description: 8.1.7.4 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATA SERVER
Last Updated: 17-MAY-2002
Size: 304M (319019230 bytes)
Also, make sure you go through the readme carefully before attempting the installation.
hope this helps!
Best Regards
Yogeeraj

Re: Oracle 8.1.7
But. You need to make sure the OS is okay.
March 2003 Patch set.
Java and required patches from http://www.hp.com/go/java
Oracle has a list of additional HP patches required at metalink.oracle.com Note:43507.1 details the patches.
This patch list is always out of date and you'll need to check itrc.hp.com for newer versions of the patches.
Now you are actually ready to install oracle and migrate data.
